Books & Music: Young Adult

Hollow Fires by Samira Ahmed ($18.99) is a powerful novel that addresses timely issues such as racism, social injustice, and privilege. The story also shows how fake news can ruin someone’s life. It follows Safiya Mirza, who aspires to be a journalist, and Jawad Ali, a young man who was murdered after being arrested and falsely identified as a terrorist because of his cosplay jetpack. The narrative has a thrilling whodunnit plot that encourages readers to flip pages until the end. The author used alternating POV, which improved the storyline. The entire book is well-written, potent, and compelling – definitely worth a read! Also, it sends a great message about finding the truth in every situation.

Each book also comes with a book club guide. It includes information about the author, a QR code for a Spotify playlist to get you in the mood, the cast of characters, and discussion questions.

Books & Music: Fiction

Siren Queen by Nghi Vo ($24.16) is a story about the journey of a Chinese-American girl towards stardom. This novel shows how Luli Wei, the main character, would do everything in her power to be the star she dreams about, even if that makes her a monster. This book took readers behind the scenes of classic Hollywood and explored the realities of fame. It’s unique in all senses, intelligent, and beautifully written. It provided far more than you could think.

The story has a sarcastic approach to old Hollywood, showing how monsters control the business industry and how actors were bound-tight by contracts. It’s well-written, and the usage of metaphors and symbolism nicely complements the story’s folklore, magic, and fantasy elements! The book also confronts racism, sexual orientation, and desire.

Here is the book club guide that’s included in the box. There’s author information and the cast of characters. The booklet also contains discussion questions and a music playlist to listen to.

This month, I received got two books to add to my diverse book collection. They’re both worthy of a read as they tackle timely social issues like racism and injustice. There are so many things to learn from these books, and I enjoyed reading them. The first book is a heart-gripping story of a boy who is a victim of fake news and racism, while the other tackles the story behind the scenes of old-age Hollywood through intelligent metaphors. To make the reading experience more engaging, the boxes also included a book club guide with a music playlist. If you need help in finding your next best read, Now in Books would be a great option!
