It’s the Ipsy vs. Sephora Play vs. Birchbox $10 Beauty Box showdown!

Ipsy vs. Sephora PLAY! vs. Birchbox

BOX BASICS: All three subscriptions are just $10 per month, so it’s easy to draw comparisons. All three of these beauty boxes also ship out 5 samples (Sephora PLAY! also sends a bonus fragrance plus a beauty item, and occasionally you’ll get a small extra in Birchbox).

CUSTOMIZATION: All three subscriptions also ask you to complete a basic beauty profile. Ipsy allows you to rate items for ipsy match and has started allowing a limited number of subscribers to select an item, but that feature isn’t yet universal. Birchbox also allows you to rate items but doesn’t alter your profile in response to your ratings.

REFERRALS & POINTS: Both Birchbox and Ipsy offer referral points; redeem points on full-size products in the Birchbox shop or on selected samples in the Ipsy bonus section. You earn points on the monthly Sephora subscription plus you can redeem a PLAY! card in-store for an extra 50 points on any purchase.

VARIATIONS: All three of these boxes also send out multiple subscriber variations – we’re showing what we’ve reviewed here, and we would love to hear your experiences in the comments!

Our thoughts? You’re most likely to get items you’ll find in Sephora in PLAY!, including some cult up and coming goodies. That’s a no brainer. Ipsy is a mix of influencer faves, some prestige products, and some drugstore. You won’t often find drugstore products in Birchbox – but you may find some interesting natural beauty brands.

Play! by Sephora

Items:

Total Value: About $30

This month’s box had a nice curation of skincare products, but no perfume samples like we’re used to. Well, the good thing is that they included items worthy of adding to a daily morning and night skin regimen, especially the cleansing balm and the refreshing cucumber mask.

Birchbox

Regular Box

Items:

Total Value: About $42.02

This month’s regular box included a couple of hair products, skin care essentials, and a mascara. The mascara stood out the most because, aside from having the highest value among the items, it makes thin lashes look thicker and more appealing. Also, this box featured 6 items instead of the previous 5, but it’s not yet sure if that change will stick or if it will depend on the total product value.

Birchbox

Curated Box

Items:

Total Value: About $46.27

Some of the samples in the curated box are super tiny but many of them are quite useful, even the foil pack. The whole point is to try before you buy to see if an item feels good, smells good, or works well for you so in that case, Birchbox has hit the mark. Having 3 sample choices in the box was disappointing and 4 hair products was a bit too much, although three of them were a good fit for the profile.

Ipsy

Items:

Total Value: About $36

The bag’s theme for this month is perfect for spring! The liquid eyeliner and the vegan hydrating primer are the most interesting as they are both long lasting and very efficient, while the primer is perfect when you want to get away with less foundation. All in all, everything definitely lived up to the theme!

For this month, we are all for the Ipsy Glambag! Ipsy continues to spoil subscribers with great products coupled with useful tips and they proved that again this month. Play! by Sephora is also quite impressive. Although there was no perfume sample, the skincare products made up for it. Birchbox regular and curated both come in the last place for several misses. The curated box comes with more products, the hair items were too much. Overall, we still think that all the boxes did a great job for this month, and we’re hoping to see good in the changes they’re doing for Birchbox.

What did you think of this month’s Sephora PLAY!Ipsy, and Birchbox? Did you have a favorite?
