Lit-Cube Jr. delivers book-driven adventures and explorations for early readers. This is a brand new monthly themed book and bookish items subscription box – just for kids! This box is intended for readers that around around 8-12 years of age or children who are reading chapter books and middle grade novels. This month featured space exploration! Note – this subscription ships in a padded flat-rate priority mail envelope.
Solar System Scratch and Sketch ($10.64) 20 space concept pages with information and fun facts about the solar system and space exploration, each paired with 20 sketch pages featuring color swirls, patterns, and even glow-in-the-dark boards under an easy to scratch off coating. Includes a wooden etching wand and 20 additional “Far-Out Sketch” pages to doodle on with your own pens or markers. We thought it was nice to get an art activity book with this subscription
Little Big Benny by Katie Cook ($9.99) This clever paperback, the first in a new series, shares the exploits of Benny Armstrong, Jr., “the boy who didn’t know he was the universe.” Benny is tracked, and frequently tricked, by a mischievous pair of Zetas, aliens tasked with helping mankind live a more peaceful existence. Benny deals with everyday annoyances, like bullies, but much of the story occurs within his body itself. Events in the overall narrative are juxtaposed with the viewpoint of the various anthropomorphic inhabitants of Benny’s body: his earwax, toe lint, the joy in his heart, and many others react to events in Benny’s life (and grooming regimen), not fully knowing the cause of their frustrations, much in the way Benny suffers through the constant meddling of the Zetas. Very creative and targeted at young readers ready for chapter books, the 104-page has occasional black and white illustrations and comes with a 29-page illustrated character guide. Our daughter gets really easily hooked on series books and it was great to get the first one – we are completionists!
Astronaut Neapolitan Ice Cream ($2.79) One of the earliest freeze-dried items to become popular, ice cream is still the best! This .7 oz slab is ready to eat and comes in classic Neapolitan.
Guardians of the Galaxy Stickers: This box also includes a few stickers from the recent movie, featuring three of the most-beloved characters.
Lit Cube Jr. Tee Shirt ($10) 100% cotton tee with an exploration through reading themed illustration – It reads
The more you read, the more things you’ll know
The more you learn, oh, the places you’ll go!

I like the fun approach to reading taken by Lit-Cube Jr. The fiction book is fun and imaginative, and the non-fiction book has a great hands-on aspect to it. The theme-appropriate treat — ice cream — doesn’t hurt either! We didn’t expect a shirt with this subscription (it asked at signup, but honestly we forgot!), but it definitely was a nice touch. The total value of the August box was about $33 – about $10 more than it cost (including shipping), so we were happy with the value. Our daughter was delighted with everything in the box – and absolutely loved getting books in the mail!
