Fall is definitely here with long sleeves and sweaters for Five Four. Five Four Club is a men’s clothing monthly subscription club – sign up, pick a style profile and your sizes, and get clothes every month. My style profile is a “mix.” This subscription ships at the end of the month, and mine didn’t ship until October. Until recently Five Four Club was a retail brand, but now you must be a member in order to purchase clothes in their shop. We got a kick out of seeing it on Wahlburgers.
The subscription is a $60 flat monthly fee, so you receive a variable number of items each month, depending on the value of the month’s selections (months with several items usually include a tee shirt or other lower value item). This month, I was sent two substantial and fairly high-value selections.
The evolution of Five Four Club continues. If you’ve read my previous reviews, you know I’ve been known to wax philosophic on the shift in style of the Five Four line, as well as the little branding elements that have crept into the garments. This month, the bag contained a themed card with the clothes (in the past, it’s been a simple packing sheet). It appears each season will have three volumes of wardrobe.
The makeover extends to the styling philosophy, too. Five Four Club will now present more complete outfits through each season. I think the balance of different garments already reflects this, somewhat — if you look across any three consecutive months, you’ll see a mix of pieces. Perhaps this means the pieces from one month will match the next stylistically. In any case, Five Four Club sees this as a reboot of their approach, so it will be interesting to see how it is reflected in the selections.
This first, “preparation” installment had two garments, both cool-weather tops.
Lynwood Heather Grey Sweater: This is a winter sweater in California! Elsewhere, it is a great weight for wearing inside or for layering. It is very lightweight, so it wears comfortably and is a perfect substitute for a dress shirt. It is a cotton knit and is very soft and non-restricting.
Both items display the ubiquitous Five Four striped tag, discretely along the seam at the hip.
McNairy Barrow Blue L/S Button Down: Mark McNair was a guest designer, contributing several items one month this summer. This encore piece has the “Taking Care of Mother [expletive] Business” logo and a multi-tonal large blue checker pattern.
Several style touches can be found, from the logo, to the breast pocket stitching, to the pleated wrists.
The interior yoke has a riff on the Five Four Club signature stripe with McNairy duckies sprinkled throughout. The collar has its own redundant button, too.
The back of the shirt is fairly classic, with a center bi-directional pleat. The unique color scheme of the shirt all but guarantees it will match every pair of jeans in your closet. The almost tawny strip running crosswise over the indigo and baby blue mix gives slightly distressed appearance to the fabric.
I like the selections this month. The light sweater is key going into Fall in a temperate zone, and it is very wearable. The McNair piece has some wild touches, but it is mainstream enough to retain everyday wearability.
I’m intrigued to see what the new reset means for the subscriber and whether it will impact the styling choices and selections in a noticeable way. Five Four Club has always provided a variety of pieces across each season, so I suspect this relaunch is primarily an exercise in branding and communication of mission.
