treats box october 2015 box
Treats is a new monthly snack subscription full of snacks from around the world. You can expect to receive eclectic and interesting snacks that you’ve never sampled before! The Standard Pack offers 4-5 snacks, while the Premium box offers 8-10. You’ll get your first box within a few days, which I love!

The snacks are carefully packed and neatly wrapped in tissue.  It looks beautiful, and due to the careful manner in which the box is packed, we’ve had everything survive shipping in pristine condition so far.

This month, we even got a nice handwritten card introducing the theme and announcing a little something extra!

The handy card give gives the English translation of the contents’ name and maker.  Take the link to the Treats site to learn more about each item. This pack featured treats from Serbia and Croatia!  Looking at the packages, I determined that all the Kras brand treats are made in Croatia; the other companies are all located in Serbia.

The first layer of goodies…treats box october 2015 second layer

…And the second layer (with still more underneath).   There is really a lot in here!  The careful packing extends beyond the tissue.  All the contents are arranged in the box in a very meticulous fashion.  The box is packed absolutely full which means you get as many treats as can fit, and they don’t shift around, so the treats are better protected from shipping damage.

treats box october 2015 review

Everything in the box.  A veritable bounty of Treats!  This month featured items that were a little easier to identify than previous months.  The Balkan style of packaging (often showing pictures of the food contained within) helped a bit, but the EU-friendly multi-lingual packaging (with liberal use of English) helped a lot.

Prima Pretzel Sticks:  A very classic (hey, it even says it on the label) pretzel stick.  Each one is about the size of an ordinary Pocky stick and has a traditional pretzel taste, but with a bit of butter flavor.

Stark Smoki Peanut Flips:  Don’t be deceived by the name — these aren’t smoky at all.  They are corn puffs with a peanut butter coating.  A bit like puffed cheetos, but with a little more give and crackle versus powdery crunch.  The coating reminds me a bit of the outside of a peanut butter ball from Reese’s puff cereal.

Napolitanke Mocca Wafer Cookies:  I thought these were astoundingly good wafer cookies.  The coffee filling is nicely flavored, and it is present in sufficient quantity to bind and flavor the entire wafer.  The texture is excellent, being very crisp but not papery or powdery.  Plus, the box is huge.

The inside of the wafer box.  There are TWO layers of these things in here!  This box is 4-8 times the size I would expect in a treat sampler box, even for a full-size item.  Well played, Treats!

Isleri Eurocrem Biscuit:  Hazelnut creme (apparently comprising 39% of total mass or volume) between two cookies.  One side of the sandwich is coated in chocolate.  The cookie itself is a bit like a Nilla wafer, but without the strong vanilla flavoring.  The creme is not particularly rich or flavorful, so the cookie as a whole is a bit dry.

Jaffa Munchmallow Classic:  I love the individual wrapping like a little Wendy’s cheeseburger.  Each Munchmallow comprises a soft but hearty cookie (quasi-gingerbread) topped with a big puff of marshmallow, with chocolate coating on the entire thing.  I’m not huge on marshmallow, but these are pretty good.  There is lots of the white stuff to satisfy mallow fans.

Tortica Wafer:  A decent wafer of the pale, crispy variety, layered with deep chocolate and coated in the same.  Good chocolate flavor, but even with the coating the filling to wafer ratio seemed less than the Napolitanke.

Dorina Keks Chocolate Bar:  Little bits of butter cookies are mixed into the chocolate, giving a little bit of crunch and cookie goodness throughout.  The milk chocolate is really creamy and has a fine texture and great taste.

Bananko:  Very interesting!  The inside is a banana-flavored solid creme.  Its not gooey or very creamy, but it has a very bizarre mouthfeel.  I could not for the life of me locate any structure within the Bananko responsible for the sensation, but the center has a resistance to bite that closely resembles an actual banana.

Pionir Kidy Coconut Dessert:  A light milk chocolate covering surrounds a gooey coconut-flavored center.  The account creme is thick and sweet, with a little bit of a caramelized taste.  There is not really any distinct coconut texture to be detected, but the flavor is there.

Kinder Happy Hippo:  This is actually from Germany, but it was kindly thrown in as a bonus item.  What a fabulous job it must be when you have extra Happy Hippos just laying around! This crisp little guy is filled with both vanilla and chocolate cremes (the kind that flows, albeit very slowly, at room temperature), and he has little crispy candy bits stuck around his circumference.

Kras Lizli Milk Chocolate:  A simple milk chocolate pop in a fun animal shape.

Ki-Ki Plus Candies:  Very similar to a Starburst, these come in cherry, strawberry, lemon, and pineapple flavors.  The fruit flavor is a bit subdued, probably because they are natural, and the focus is on the chewiness.  This was a big bag, sporting over 20 pieces.

Animal Kingdom Chocolate Bars:  These bars were wrapped together in a 5+1 free pack, the extra bar being duplicate lion bar.  The flavor and design of the bars themselves are identical; only the wrapper is different.  This is a very light, melty, and tasty milk chocolate.  Each pack comes with a collector sticker.

This edition Treats was another win.  The Serbian and Croatian treats had flavor profiles that are pretty much in line with mainstream American tastes, but this was my first time tasting any of these brands (with the possible exception of Ki-Ki).  You can taste that the items are good quality, and you can also tell from the packaging that they are everyday treats that ordinary people in Serbia and Croatia, not ultra-fancy export products.  I think that is a great quality of this box:  you get a real sense of the  candy-geist of the region.

It was so much fun reading your review about these snacks… I am originally from Serbia and am very well familiar with all of these sweets. I’m glad you liked them! I must give kudos to Treats, these really represent the best of the best from the Serbian and Croatian treats.
And you were right, Kras is all from Croatia, the rest are Serbian brands. It seems like the Isleri Eurocream Biscuits were not very fresh, as they only get dry like that when they are not fresh. As for the banana flavored sweets covered with chocolate, Bananko, it’s a super famous treat in Serbia. I would have suggetsted a different brand’s version of the treat as a better one, but this is also pretty good!
This is a super big box with all of these items, I am very impressed. They would not necessarily cost $25 if bought locally, but given the fact it’s all imported, I’d say it’s well worth it! Now I kind of want to order it for my boyfriend so he can try all the goodies coming from my country 🙂

Tom will be so excited to read your comments! If you subscribe and just pop Treats a note I am sure they will send you the Serbian box! That would be so neat. I cannot believe there is a better Bananko, It was delicious already. I loved the Eurocream biscuits, sometimes my husband and I have different tastes.

We quit breaking down the prices of the international food subscriptions for precisely that reason – it didn’t make a lot of sense. We have reviewed so many boxes we know when something is appropriate value for what is paid, and what is more, this is definitely more.

Thank you so much for your comments! OMG I almost forgot – do not miss this subscription either: https://boxes.hellosubscription.com/subscription-box/candy-adriatico/
