My Two Border Towns by David Bowles ($13.69) is a must-read book. It features a boy with his father and a vibrant community that thrives between two borders. This book tells an eye-opening story of refugees residing between Mexico and the US. I appreciate the boy’s concern over life on the border and how he and his dad can just go back and forth between two towns while his friends can’t. The story shows that such circumstances exist and that there are refugees living between borders. It relays a message of compassion and empathy. Also, the book is filled with amazing watercolor illustrations that made it more exciting to read. Even the cover looks fantastic as well!

Aside from the book, there are also other extras in the box, including a parent’s letter. It explains what the book is all about and why they choose to feature it this month. There are also key terms and ideas that you have to explain to your little bookworm before reading the story.

The flip side of the letter is the activity for the month. It is called “Book Bingo”, and it’s a fun way to check other books with the same topic as My Two Border Towns. After crossing it all out, your kid is expected to learn more about border crossing issues and concerns. Just below the activity are more questions relating to it.

There’s also a bookmark included in the box, and it carries the discussion questions. There are several questions printed on it to ask your little bookworms after reading the story. Even the traditional Mexican street food Elotes is featured, which is grilled corn on the cob smothered in spicy and creamy chili, garlic, and Cotija cheese-spiked sauce.

The box also comes with a postcard to send to a friend on another border. Kids can be as creative as they can be and write their messages in the ample space provided. The front portion looks like papel picado or perforated Mexican banners. There’s also a quote printed on it that reads:

It is the obligation of every person born in a safer room to open the door when someone in danger knocks.

Clearly, this month’s book pick is something that every kid should read. It’s such a meaningful story about refugees, and it was written in such a way that kids will easily understand! The box also included a welcome letter that explains this month’s book pick, plus an activity and bookmark with discussion questions. I love how they encourage further discussions after reading the book. There’s even a postcard to send to loved ones just to check up on them. All in all, when it comes to picking diverse titles, Little Feminist Book Club never disappoints!
