Beloved by Toni Morrison ($12.30)
New York Times Bestseller
Staring unflinchingly into the abyss of slavery, this spellbinding novel transforms history into a story as powerful as Exodus and as intimate as a lullaby.
Sethe, its protagonist, was born a slave and escaped to Ohio, but eighteen years later she is still not free. She has too many memories of Sweet Home, the beautiful farm where so many hideous things happened. And Sethe’s new home is haunted by the ghost of her baby, who died nameless and whose tombstone is engraved with a single word: Beloved. Filled with bitter poetry and suspense as taut as a rope, Beloved is a towering achievement.
“You can’t go wrong by reading or re-reading the collected works of Toni Morrison. Beloved, Song of Solomon, The Bluest Eye, Sula, everything else — they’re transcendent, all of them. You’ll be glad you read them.”–Barack Obama
If you’re a fan of Historical Fiction, this one’s a great read. It also has elements of Magical Realism.
The author’s style is exceptional, you’ll realize by Toni Morrison really deserved that Nobel Prize award.
The story is pretty complex, tackling heavy topics such as slavery. Every detail has been put into play for a reason. It catches your attention and not let go!
Culture Carton has always been very impressive! This subscription never fails in coming up with classic themes and exclusive items to further improve our style and fashion. I love all the accessories I received this month especially the pocket square and necktie, but what impressed me the most is the lapel pin. I also love the featured book, it’s so unique in many ways and the story is deep and truly interesting. I’m looking forward to more great reads from this subscription, as well as the items that I can easily use every day!
