Girls Can Crate is a monthly subscription for children between 5 and 10 years of age that promotes the idea that girls can do whatever they set their minds to. Each month features a different female pioneer whose story inspires girls to achieve. Each box includes a 20 page activity book that includes the heroine’s story, 2-3 STEAM activities and creative play props. Boxes cost $29.95 each month and can ship to either the United States or Canada. Although this box is intended for girls, I’m a firm believer that it’s crucial for boys to believe that girls can do whatever they set their minds to! The themes celebrate female pioneers from diverse backgrounds, but the activities themselves are gender neutral.

Each box arrives well packaged with attractive squiggles.

Your first box comes with a special supply pack to keep and use on future boxes. This included some washable Crayola markers and a pair of scissors.

May’s crate is chock full of information, activities and supplies!

Writer-Director Ava DuVernay is this month’s heroine. She’s a creative storyteller who gives importance to diversity. Ms. DuVernay is a contemporary heroine, but the box often features women from recent history and the last few centuries.

As always, the pointers they provide are spot on! The stories that surround us – those that we read, we hear, and we watch – can make a great impact in our lives more than we can imagine. That is why as early as now, it’s important to make kids aware of the power of storytelling. We’ll check out the movies suggested – Kiki’s Delivery Service, Wadjada, Akeelah and the Bee, The Eagle Huntress, and Queen of Katwe.

A sneak peek for the June crate! Looks exciting!

“The Illuminating Filmmaker” is the title of this month’s activity book. It celebrates the work of Ava DuVernay. She is best known for her recent Sundance Best Director win and Golden Globe nomination for her work on the movie “Selma.”

The kids will definitely learn an important thing or two from Ava DuVernay. After earning a college degree, she wrote and produced her own movie and even founded her own talent agency.

The enclosed activity booklet included cute illustrations and fun activities for the kids! The activities highlight the themes of the box and hone language, math, and problem solving skills.

There are puzzles, quizzes, word finds, and even craft activities in the book.

The book has lots of great biographical information on the featured woman, so kids can really get to understand their story and accomplishments.

There is really a lot to do in this box!

The activities in the booklet are enough to keep any kid busy for awhile, and we haven’t even gotten to the crafts and main activities yet!

The box had two identical sheets of fact filled cards containing all kinds of cool info on movie production and our heroine’s life. We cut these out to make a fun Memory game.

There were also supplies to make a simple thaumatrope – when you rub the straw between your hands, the figure spins back and forth quickly. The image on one side is slightly different than the other, so it creates the illusion of movement. Our Rosie was waving at us!

The third main project was constructing a shadow box theater to act out our own skits and plays. The box included parts and instructions for making the theater, plus silhouettes of many animals and sea creatures to star in the show!

A big clapboard was included, too! My daughter had tons of fun using it to direct her own production of “Hyptis.” I have no idea what that means, but its adorable.

What a great box! Everything’s just so on point, from the pointers to the booklet and to the activities. I love the way the featured heroine is used to introduce a topic, but the box goes beyond her biography and also teaches broader lessons. Kids can have a lot of fun with this subscription, and even grown-ups will learn a lot just by reading Ava DuVernay’s story.
