Craft Beer Club October 2016 Subscription Box Review & Coupon

Very few things in life rival the pleasure of having delicious craft beer delivered to your doorstep. The Club delivers a mixed twelve pack each month which includes three cans or bottles of each of four varieties – most month’s selections come in bottles. Each box has had two offerings each from two featured micro breweries. This month’s brewers were Brickway Brewery and Distillery in Omaha, Nebraska, and Santa Fe Brewery Company from New Mexico.

Two separate volumes of Micro Brew News were included, one for each Brewer. They include information on the history and philosophy of the featured breweries, as well as details on the style, stats, and composition of each brew.

The back of each sheet had a recipe designed to pair well with the beer selections (or in some cases, actually use the beer in the recipe!), as well as some beer-related trivia. The trivia is very instructive, covering some facet of brewing or brew culture in depth.

Part of the fun is seeing the distinctive labeling on the beers. The State Pen Porter has a guardtower on one side, and a ball and chain on the other!

Brickway Brewery Pils: This pilsner has a strong malt and crisp hops finish. Very flavorful, with a bit more presence and zip than your typical pilsner. Our guest taster said it was “light and an all around good-drinkin’ beer,” and I can’t help but agree.

Brickway Brewery Hef: I loved this Hefeweizen! It has the creamy, unfiltered feel that is typical, but it didn’t display the usual yeasty taste. Instead, it was silken and smooth, with a luscious texture and gentle notes of banana and clove.  Really tasty!

Santa Fe Brewing Company State Pen Porter: This porter has a beautiful, clean flavor. There is a bit of licorice and raisin, but the malt also has a stark molasses-like blackness to it that quenches any overabundance of sweet and leaves a clean and deep finish. The hops are particularly well-balanced on this one, supporting the malt without bittering it at all.

Santa Fe Brewing Company Happy Camper IPA: Not too bitter for an IPA, this highly-drinkable beer instead borrows spice, floral, and citrus notes from the hops. Our guest taster loved this beer, noting the light touch of the hops and the pleasantly bright character of the ale.

I’ve enjoyed this subscription immensely, and I like that the selections include two beers from each featured brewery, as it allows you to appreciate their mastery of multiple styles. They are all highly drinkable and appeal to a wide audience of beer lovers – quite a few IPAs and pale ales find their way into the box, but none have been hopped heavily enough to fall outside the realm of good taste. This is a great subscription to split for boy’s or girl’s night, or just to have an ever-evolving selection of craft beers on hand for your own enjoyment.
