Cajun Crate is a monthly subscription service that delivers the “Taste of Louisiana each month wherever you are”. It is $39.99 a month and that includes shipping. They offer 1, 3, 6, or 12 month subscriptions and all subscriptions automatically renew until cancelled.

My box was shipped inside of another box and was very well protected with bubble wrap.

There were a couple of info cards inside.

Look at that pretty box! Cajun Crate is based in Lafayette, Louisiana and my box was shipped from one of the suburbs of that town and happens to be the same city where my husband has family!

The seals depicted on the box ensure the consumer that the products containing the seal were grown, packaged, or processed in Louisiana.

Bubble wrap is a must when you are shipping glass and everything looked great!

So far, so good! I was a little afraid that this box might be kitschy but this stuff looks delicious.

There was a very nice fold-out information card.

The card had a recipe using 3 of the products from the box, a bio on a local chef…

…info on where in Louisiana the products originated…

…and info on the products and how to use them!

First up is the sweet stuff. MiMi’s Pralines ($4) are the rich and creamy type that are almost fudge-like and have delicious pecans inside. Swamp Pop in Satsuma Fizz ($2) was very refreshing and my daughter thought it tasted just like a satsuma, which is a type of tangerine. It has cane sugar, which grows in that area; I saw sugarcane fields on my last visit.

I have a Blackened Chicken Pasta Salad that I love to make and the next time around I am going to use Carmalete’s Base Seasoning ($5) on it instead of my usual spice blend. I tasted just a bit straight out of the jar and it bit back. Spicy! I am happy to see that it is MSG-free and contains only 5 ingredients: sea salt, black pepper, granulated garlic and onion, and red pepper.

Sauce de la Pirogue ($5) is “Cajun Mayeaux” and can be used in place of regular mayo on your burger, sandwiches, potato salad, deviled eggs, and so on. It’s spicy and my husband will love it on his sandwiches!

Tabasco Family Reserve Pepper Sauce ($10) is made in small batches and aged for 5-8 years (regular Tabasco is only aged for 3 years). This gives it extra depth of flavor but my husband said “it tastes like Tabasco”. Go figure.

I don’t deep fat fry so I will pass the Mexi-Cajun Fish Fry Mix ($3) along to a friend. It has cornmeal and spices and can be used for coating fish, oysters, shrimp, or veggies.

I was a little worried that The Cajun Spoon Jambalaya Mix ($3.50) would be a sodium bomb but it says right on the front of the box: “low sodium, no MSG”. Yay! It was very easy to make and even my 13-year old picky eater asked for seconds. I used turkey kielbasa and chicken breast meat to keep the fat in check and loved it. As a bonus, for every box sold Cajun Spoon delivers a packaged meal to a food bank.

Dinner was on the table in 30 minutes AND the leftovers were great for lunch the next day.

I loved my first Cajun Crate! I enjoyed trying new products and found a new favorite in the jambalaya mix. The value was a little low at $32.50 but when you figure in shipping then it is about even. I think this box is more about curation than getting the most bang for your buck. I asked a friend who is from Louisiana if she had ever had these products before and she said she thought that they probably came from a specialty grocer. I really look forward to seeing what comes next month!
