Broderi Box June 2016 box

Broderi Box is a monthly box from Nordic Needle filled with amazing fibers for needlework and embroidery. You’ll get a box full of special threads, mystery tool, accessory, and a little something extra. You’ll also get an access to a secret link to a special blog post that contains more information about that month’s box.

FYI – You can’t subscribe to this box (must purchase every month) and the window for the next month’s box may close before you even get your first box. I had figured that I’d wait to see the first box before continuing and missed out on the July box. Fortunately I was able to nab one off the waitlist. Just something to keep in mind!

This month’s box takes you to exotic destinations through beads and threads. According to the information card, the threads were from Italy, Japan and Peru, while the beads inspired by Tahitian black pearls. The link and password to the secret Broderi Box page is also indicated in the card.

I was excited by my first look in – I mostly craft holiday things, but most especially Halloween!

The site includes a lengthy curator’s letter, part of which I screenshotted here.  I actually think they’d probably sell more boxes if these were open to the public but since they went to the extreme of password protecting everything, I’m only providing short excerpts.

Everything in my June box!

CompuStitch The Star De-Tailor ($4.99) I totally FLIPPED OUT when I got this – I can’t find mine anywhere and I have been stressing out about it. I was a little peeved that I couldn’t sign up for the next month right away because any box that sends me a star de-tailor is a-OK in my book. If you’re unfamiliar with it, it’s a little tool to help you secure your loose threads – and even works on the tiniest nubs. It’s saved my stitching so many times – I’m a notorious let’s go down to the last bit stitcher.

ThreadWorx Hand Overdyed Floss 1120 Foxy ($4.10) The ThreadWorx floss isn’t even in the information but is a great variation and sure to be used by moi on something Halloweeny.

Mill Hill Glass Pebble Beads 05081 ($1.50) Everyone loves a good Mill Hill bead 🙂 These are pretty large so I’m not quite sure what I’ll use them for yet, but they may make an interesting finishing item.

Rainbow Gallery Gold Rush 18 GD110C ($2) The information card was super helpful on this one – it notes that it needs to be secured well because it can unravel, but it’s just really neat with a touch of glimmer!

Rainbow Gallery Fuzzy Stuff Black FZ02 ($3) This is really wild and a great fuzzy fiber. Broderi box gave a nice tip that it can be couched with longer stitches to maintain the max fuzzyness.

Rainbow Gallery Patent Leather ($4.75) Isn’t this WILD?! There’s only 2 yards so you have to plan carefully! Broderi notes that it’s best for needlepoint and long arm cross stitch, and the package itself says for Santa’s boots & belt – great idea!

Rainbow Gallery Petite Very Velvet ($3.50) This is a round little velour trim that’s soft and… velvety! The card notes it’s for 18 court needlepoint or 9/10 count cross-stitch, so I may have to take up needlepoint to use it. I kind of need someone to seduce me into needlepoint. I do love the different stitches but am not very keen at the idea of selecting

Rainbow Gallery Black Alpaca 18 ($2.50) So soft and fuzzy – and 100% alpaca, no blends! I was impressed that this is a natural black too.

I loved this box! The value is actually under the cost – about $26 and the box itself is $24.99 + 3.99 shipping, but I didn’t really care all that much because it was really fun and I liked the tips on the fibers. I also have the expectation of paying shipping for anything from a needlework shop (I just placed an order last night from another shop with a $12 shipping charge).  I’m really dying to get the first part of the Lizzie Kate Spooked Mystery sampler in (stupid stolen credit card has delayed my goodies!), although I don’t think any of the colors lend themselves to replacing with these, but I have at least 5 Halloween charts I’m planning to stitch this summer and I’ll probably get the chance to use all of them!

Have you tried Broderi Box? What are you stitching this month?

If you want the enjoyment of needlepoint without the bother of picking stitches try counted needlepoint. Kathy Rees and Laura Perin are 2 big designers you can look at to get a taste of what’s out there.

Thank you Rachel! I will give it a look! It looks like some of the charts may be a good way to show off some of the specialty threads. I could make a mish-mash sampler. My last foray into canvas was the plastic kind, I was probably about 12. I made a house and I clearly recall something being too short, I cut it wrong. I am certain I still have the house at my folks’ house!

I can free-hand embroider but I do it rarely – it takes me much longer to make all those decisions!
