There’s also quarterly military history and cookbooks. I selected the Read to Me Case.

IMG_5390This month’s package arrived well-packed with a small piece of paper providing extra support during transport. Once I removed it, I was greeted by a delightful collection of illustrated children’s books. I called my son to come join me. He was so excited to read them!

IMG_5392 (2)Along with the books, this month’s box arrived with an activity booklet. I loved the quote on the front!

My son was especially excited about the word search! When it was bed time, he told me that he couldn’t go to bed because he wanted to finish the word search first.

IMG_5439In addition to the activity sheet, the package contained four picture books: “Dumpling Soup” by Jama Kim Rattigan, “No Nap! Yes Nap!” by Margie Palatini, “Mouse, Mole, and the Falling Star” by A. H. Benjamin and John Bendall-Brunello and “Meanie Head” by Bruce Eric Kaplan.

“Dumpling Soup” ($7) by Jama Kim Rattigan is a lovely coming of age story. It tells the story of a girl who is finally grown up enough to join her mother, grandmother and aunts as they prepare a beloved dumpling soup recipe for their extended family’s New Year’s festivities. It offers a glimpse into a culture that values family and connection, while celebrating the differences between individuals within the family. It was superb. Due to the lengthy prose, I would recommend this for ages 4+.

“No Nap! Yes Nap!” ($16.94) by Margie Palatini is a delightful story of a mother trying to put her toddler to bed. Using typical parent/child dialogue, this adorable book has mass appeal. My toddler enjoyed it very much, while my preschooler thought it was hilarious! I got a good chuckle out of it too!

“Mouse, Mole and the Falling Star” ($4.82) by A. H. Benjamin and John Bendall-Brunello is the story of two best friends, Mouse and Mole, who learn that their friendship is more important than whatever comes between them. Sometimes even good friends make mistakes and misinterpret events. It’s important to communicate with one another to preserve a friendship. My children liked the illustrations and the story very much.

“Meanie Head” ($16.34) by Bruce Eric Kaplan was the one miss this month. In it, two children fight. As they do, they progressively destroy the world. Although they do acquiesce at the end of the story, by then the entire world has been destroyed, so it’s unclear where they have to turn. After reading this, my husband asked, “Really?”

Overall, though, I really enjoyed this month’s Read to Me Case from BookCase.Club! All four of these books were new to us, and we will happily read three of them again and again. Three of the books were engaging and included great, age-appropriate messages and themes. This was a real win for us. We can’t wait to see what they send next month!
