My Pretend Place is all about learning, dress-up, and adventure, including DIY adventures. My Pretend Place offers a quarterly themed pretend play and dress up subscription box for children aged 3-6. They also have a monthly Play Pretend Projects subscription! This box is designed for kids ages 3-8, with a great monthly project, including all the supplies for two children.
One of the things I love best is that there are always enough supplies for two kids to participate every month.
The box always comes with a few stickers and a handle to help decorate the shipping box, those were in the envelope in the first photo.
And a magnet!
This month’s play project was making our own walkie-talkies! Other than a pair of scissors and a pen, the box had everything we needed to make the craft, including step-by-step instructions.
There’s also a pretend letter to help set the scene! This letter was from the maintenance supervisor at an elementary school; in it, she extolled the virtues of the walkie-talkie.
Small jewelry boxes formed the skeleton of the walkie-talkies, with all the decorative elements to be taped or glued on.
The kit had plenty of materials to make the craft, with lots of extra foam and sparkle tape to create embellishments or use for your own crafts later.
The first step was taping the boxes together and pre-cutting a hole for the antenna.
Then we wrapped each box in black paper, securing it with sparkle tape. We then traced circles and rectangles onto the back of the sparkle foam.
These cut up foam will serve as a receiver, speaker, and talk button for each walkie-talkie.
We inserted the antennae into the boxes after securing the wrapping with sparkle tape. The sparkle tape was quite pretty — we were much less shy covering our walkie-talkies with tape, knowing it was nice looking.
We affixed the foam pieces using the glue provided.
The hardest part was making the kids wait until the walkie-talkies dried — they wanted to play with them so much!
We put them through their paces. It is funny — the kids have had real walkie-talkies before and never got this much use out of them.
We broke out the dress up gear to make the most out of the handsets.
And it devolved quickly into silly time. The range limitation of a pretend walkie-talkie makes for some funny pics. This reminded me of older kids texting each other while literally sitting next to each other. They had so much fun!
My Pretend Place offers the dress up subscription, too. (And you can also purchase the Firefighter individual box there, or the costume, or get it as the first box in a custom subscription).
