OwlCrate’s Leading Ladies for September is here! Owl Crate is a monthly subscription books and bookish items box. Each OwlCrate will contain one new Young Adult novel, as well as 3-5 other bookish items all matched to a magical monthly theme.
The information card has brief information about each item. The September 2015 theme was Leading Ladies.
The bottom of the box hoots “enjoy your adventure!”
Everything in the September OwlCrate!
This item was fun to open so I took a couple photos!
Crystal Compass Arrow Necklace ($8.50) This was an unusual style for an arrow necklace! It was meant to evoke Katniss from the Hunger Games (Mockingjay specifically) and I liked the style on this and the weight of the chain. I had wished for a tad longer but it’s part of the layering collection so it’s meant to be worn along with a longer necklace. The card that came with this item gives a code for 50% at this maker’s etsy shop – but everything is already reduced by half there. Some really gorgeous pieces in that shop!
Given the length of the arrow I thought the chain length was right!
Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy ($12.40)
For fans of John Green and Rainbow Rowell comes this powerful novel with the most fearless heroine—self-proclaimed fat girl Willowdean Dickson—from Julie Murphy, the acclaimed author of Side Effects May Vary. With starry Texas nights, red candy suckers, Dolly Parton songs, and a wildly unforgettable heroine—Dumplin’ is guaranteed to steal your heart.
Dubbed “Dumplin’” by her former beauty queen mom, Willowdean has always been at home in her own skin. Her thoughts on having the ultimate bikini body? Put a bikini on your body. With her all-American-beauty best friend, Ellen, by her side, things have always worked . . . until Will takes a job at Harpy’s, the local fast-food joint. There she meets Private School Bo, a hot former jock. Will isn’t surprised to find herself attracted to Bo. But she is surprised when he seems to like her back.
Instead of finding new heights of self-assurance in her relationship with Bo, Will starts to doubt herself. So she sets out to take back her confidence by doing the most horrifying thing she can imagine: entering the Miss Teen Blue Bonnet Pageant—along with several other unlikely candidates—to show the world that she deserves to be up there as much as any twiggy girl does. Along the way, she’ll shock the hell out of Clover City—and maybe herself most of all.
I totally want to be Willowdean’s friend. This is like the YA book for Eff your beauty standards. Has good reviews!
This book came with a sticker and a reproduced letter from the author. I should mention the whole thing was nicely collated in a sealed plastic wrapper. I didn’t expect this book at all but I enjoyed the selection!
Whoops! Wish this item had been inside the wrapper. It was on the bottom under the book so it probably got the scratch in packing. I’ll ask about it.
Megan Lara Photo Print ($3?)
MeowBox Postcard/Coupon
Two different interpretations of Hermione! I love the Alphonse Mucha inspired style of the photo print and this is a wicked cute coupon. FYI you can use HELLO10 to save 10 percent at MeowBox. I do wish the card had a bit more info like the style inspiration for the photo which I had to pull from the dark recesses of my mind way too early in the morning!
Funko Pocket Pop! Keychain Game of Thrones – Daenerys Targaryen ($6.20) I went ahead and removed the keychain bit (just unscrew!) so you can see what we do with ours! I shall add you to my collection oh Mother of Dragons. I loved having her in this box!
Whoviandrea Divergent Inspired Tote Bag ($17.50 – linked to bag in another style) This is a nice Divergent inspired tote. Dauntless is one of the five factions in Divergent and dedicated to courage, bravery, toughness, and fearlessness.
There was also a card from “Frenzy” which I thought was maybe like GoodReads but it’s HarperCollins Canada for Young Adults. Thanks HCCA for getting us this book in our boxes only a few days after it hit bookstores! Very cool.
This was a great box! It had a real pile of really great items and it’s too hard to pick out a favorite, plus a new fun book to enjoy. The total value was around $48 and the box was worth being on the waitlist for… I don’t know – four months? They finally cleared the waitlist last month and there should be a few more spots available soon – be sure to visit and sign up for the waitlist if you’re interested in signing up!
