Tinker Crate is a subscription box that inspires kids to explore and learn about science, engineering, and technology—and have fun doing it. Every month, you’ll get a new crate to help kids develop a tinkering mindset and creative problem solving skills. It is STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) focused and designed to help kids build their problem solving skills and to gain the confidence and curiosity to tackle problems where there’s no one right answer. Use code MS30 to save 30% on your first box!  (or Kiwi Crate  and the KiwiCo family subscriptions Koala Crate and Doodle Crate).

This was everything that arrived in our February 2015 Tinker Crate – the supplies, a fold-out instruction sheet, and the Tinker Zine. For February, Tinkerers would be working on an hydraulic machine.

The instructions show all the items that come in the box.

I found the instructions clear and easy to follow. We needed to assemble this project for our 6 year old, which wasn’t a surprise.

The Tinker Zine has (fun) educational information plus extra experiments. The magazine explains the concept of hydraulics using accessible and easy to understand diagrams.

I love how they connected the concept of hydraulics to things kids are actually into – like robots and imagineering. There are no mathematics, only concepts, making this a good box for multiple ages and abilities.

Design Challenge! These boxes are pretty open ended – use the project materials and follow the instructions, then tinker and take your own path.

IMG_9897 Fortunately even if you (the parent or other caregiver) aren’t tinkery, Tinker Crate provides video instructions as well as one on one email support should the need arise. I liked how this box encouraged kids to gather data as part of the experimental process.

She’s been tinkering and experimenting all morning! She used some extra clay from a Doodle Crate to add a grippy surface to the tongs.

IMG_0085Tinker Crate was accessible and fun for a wide range of ages, and perfect for the older child. If you have a precocious younger child, be prepared to build the project (younger kids won’t have the motor control to assemble the project themselves), but to have lots of fun doing it!

I posted the review while she was still working on it, she’s been doing the challenge and recording her findings. It’s now 5pm and she’s been tinkering since 7:30 this morning.
