Hello Fresh is a meal kit subscription box where you’ll get the recipes and ingredients to make 3 meals for two (or 4) every week. Take $40 off your first box with coupon code 7UT7K8. Hello Fresh is a subscription, but you can pause your deliveries and choose alternate meals (at least for the Classic box). There’s also a vegetarian box available. This is a solid meal subscription box with easy and accessible recipes.

Hello Fresh recently redesigned their menu cards, and the instructions are super easy to follow.  It has nice illustrations, is clearly written, and even lets you know nutrition info, prep time, and which recipes are best to make first to optimize freshness of perishables.  Hello Fresh sends all the sauces, bouillon and such in individual serving packets; although it means a little more packaging, they survive shipping better than the plastic cups used by Plated and others.

Ginger Beef Stir-Fry:  The beef and asparagus turned out great, but I would have loved a little more asparagus.

The sauce is salty and intense.  The meat was in incredibly tender prepared this way, but it was a little hard to slice thin prior to finishing in the sauce (as it had a crust but was still very rare in the middle at that point).

Roasted Pork Chops with Onion Gravy & Rosemary Mashed Potatoes:  very simple and approachable, the onion gravy is star of this classic meat and potatoes dish.

IMG_8151The gravy and pork chop were simply divine.  Then again, I am a sucker for onions and gravy.  The potatoes could have been better.  The skim milk didn’t add much other than water, and it separated when heated according to the directions.  I would have preferred a bit of cream or simply butter.

Shrimp & Tomato Farrotto:  This unique twist on risotto satisfied by complementing the light protein with a nutty, chewy grain and rich sauce.

IMG_8117This was an unusual pairing, as you have a slightly exotic grain, a light protein paired with a rich sauce, and seafood with cheese — but it works.  This was one of the few times when the directions were slightly vague.  For someone not used to making risotto, its not really clear how dry to let it get before adding more liquid or what the optimal consistency should be.  This was a bit of a labor-intensive dish, as you need to tend to it the entire 30 minutes it is cooking.  On these two points, this dish was a bit uncharacteristic for Hello Fresh.

To me, Hello Fresh is one of the easiest meal kit subscriptions out there – less fiddly, and I’d say a little less adventurous in the food choices too. This is not a bad thing and it’s one of the reasons we enjoy it so much. Take $40 off your first box with coupon code 7UT7K8.
