Welcome aboard! Junior Captains is a monthly subscription that invites kids to join the crew of the Selah for a voyage at sea.  Prospective shipmates start out with a starter kit, including the basics they will need to follow the real life voyage from home.  Each month, kids will receive an email from the crew featuring activities, information, recipes, and other fun activities from their most recent landfall.  The Captain has currently charted a course that should take the crew to the Virgin Islands and beyond, spanning a whopping 2-3 years.

A letter from Captain Bo explains the vision for the subscription — a sea voyage that has monthly installments accessible online, and a voyage arc lasting up to three years!

Postcards familiarize the kids with the ship, Captain Bo, and Alli.

Each voyager sends an introductory message to the kids — Even Selah the sailboat introduces itself!

The kids receive a knotted sailor’s bracelet like the one worn by Captain Bo, and they receive some more rope and instructions on how to make one themselves to give to a friend!

The Jr. Captains journal will help your crew track the voyage and adventures of the Selah from home, or log their own adventures.

The simply lined interior is suited to a journal-style Captain’s log and comes with a pen.

Subscribers start out with the rank of Swabby, but perhaps there may be some opportunity for advancement along the way.  The passport and stickers help with tracking the journey and decorating the logbook.

The passport includes additional stamps (stickers).  I think many of these destinations are out of scope for the initial voyage.  The Bahamas are a definite stop, and who knows where the winds will take the Selah from there?

The passport has plenty of room for visas.

A  inflatable globe assists with learning the geography associated with the ship’s journey.

A lightweight shoulder bag is provided for keeping project materials together.

I love the concept of this subscription.  Kids will get to share in the real adventures of the crew without the firsthand tables of a long sea voyage.  The starter kit has some nice items.  I expected the map, but the inclusion of the logbook and other extras was neat.  The real test of the subscription will be the in-voyage installments.  Since the plan is to communicate by email, I am not expecting additional souvenirs, so the content and depth of the lessons and explorations will be key.  I can’t wait to see what the Captain has in store for us!
