Five Four Club is a men’s clothing monthly subscription club – sign up, pick a style profile and your sizes, and get clothes every month. My style profile is a “mix.” This subscription ships at the end of the month.
The subscription is a $60 flat monthly fee, and traditionally we’ve received a variable number of items each month, depending on the value of the month’s selections (months with several items usually include a tee shirt or other lower value item).
Last season the bag contained a card with the clothes noting that each season will have three volumes of wardrobe. Five Four Club will now present more complete outfits through each season.
This month’s Five Four had to items that are seasonally appropriate and go well together (and go well with pretty much anything).
Darkson Raw Denim Jeans: These thick jeans have modern tailoring and a classic indigo shade of dye. The dye is far from set, so the jeans fade in accordance with your particular wear pattern. The result is a highly personalized custom “wash” on your jeans.
The detail on the back is very low-key and clean. Of course, the Five Four striped tag is subtly present.
The wash instructions give a few options for handling the rate of fade and degree of patterning in the wash.
The jeans are straight-leg with a simple hem. The customization of the raw denim is a cool feature, but I think it is the understated design that sells me on the jeans — they have a comfy, but elegant look to them.
The description on the site is a bit confusing, as it touts the durability of the indigo wash. The cards on the jeans celebrate the opposite quality — the lack of colorfastness and customization it affords.
Willow Red Wine Henley: I love the color of this shirt — the deep red is made less bold, tempered with white, yet the dark color does not turn into a pink, despite the intermingled white.
The fabric makes this more of a Sam Winchester Henley than a Dexter Morgan Henley. It is super soft to the touch and has a very smooth look to it.

The now well-established Five Four tag adorns the hip. I love the evolution to a subtle tag for branding. In the early days, Five Four’s desire to brand its clothes expressed itself in logo tees and flagrant graphics. The new approach meshes better with the more sophisticated styling that has also been ushered in.
This shirt is very versatile. The lovely texture of the shirt means it would work as an under sport coat dressy-casual option, and it works equally well layered or solo.
I’ve been a subscriber to Five Four for quite a while now, and, oddly, I almost feel a sense of pride seeing how far the brand has evolved. I’ve witnessed the gradual shift and improvement in styling and branding over time, and Five Four has acted as if they’ve taken my unarticulated encouragement and advice to heart. The pieces are much more elegant, wearable, and upscale than in the past.
