Books & Music: Young Adult

Required Reading For The Disenfranchised Freshman by Kristen R. Lee ($18.99) is a debut novel that revolves around the issue of racism and elitism, which are both timely and relatable. The protagonist, Savannah, encounters racism every day during her freshman year at the prestigious Wooddale College. Due to these circumstances, she’s stuck between choosing to be her true self or letting racism conquer. Soon, she reached her breaking point and realized she no longer has to fit in a group where she never felt included, to begin with.

The book also included a small card showing Now In Books’ new podcast episode, 2022 Book-to-Screen Adaptations. It talks about some of the biggest books hitting the screen this year.

Since this box is Books & Music, it comes with a guide and a Spotify playlist to help you get in the mood! The guide contains info about the author, Kristen R. Lee, a list of characters in the novel, book recommendations to read next, a word search puzzle, and an easy-to-follow Sweet Potato Pie recipe.

Books & Music: Fiction

The Fiction selection is The Family Chao by Lan Samantha Chang ($19.82), a story that focuses on a family of Chinese immigrants in Wisconsin. The mystery started when three siblings, Dagou, Ming, and James, became suspects for their father’s death. This novel has a little bit of everything – family drama, murder mystery, culture, humor, rivalry, and the classic American Dream of a typical Asian family, including food.

Like the first book, this novel came in its own box. There’s a theme card included that doubles as a bookmark.

The book club guide features information about author Lan Samantha Chang, the cast of characters, discussion questions, a fun word search activity, a recipe for Sesame Peanut Noodles, and a Spotify playlist for more feels!
