This is a review of the Jimmy Chin Teaches Adventure Photography class from MasterClass!

The MasterClass Instructor – Jimmy Chin

This class opens with an amazing introduction to what Jimmy Chin wants viewers to get out of this class. He talks about how photography is a way of life. It is a process of discovery not just of the world, but of oneself. This opening lesson really jumps right into an amazing on location shoot of his climbing friends where viewers get a walk through of Jimmy’s process. For those who are not familiar with Jimmy Chin, he is a National Geographic photographer, Academy-Award winning film maker, and mountain sports athlete.

As a 15 year veteran of The North Face Athlete Team, Jimmy is one of the most sought-after and recognized adventure sports athletes, photographers and filmmakers working today. He is one of the only people to ski Mount Everest from the summit and climbed the much coveted first ascent of the Shark’s Fin on Meru. Jimmy has been profiled in numerous publications including National Geographic, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, GQ, People, and The New Yorker.

In this class, Jimmy wants viewers to get a better understanding of their goals and how they want to think about their photography. He wants viewers to really think about what their idea of successes is, what is their dream, and then what are they willing to do to get there. And to understand this, Jimmy has taken this class as an opportunity to share his process, how he thinks about his work, along with lots of instruction on technical aspects and practical skills.

MasterClass Workbook – Jimmy Chin

The workbook for this class will be your guide to advancing your photography techniques. Each lesson has a review which includes lists of main points from each video lesson. Along with these reviews, each chapter has a learn more section which takes one aspect, like light or depth, and expands on it. Not only does this workbook provide great exercises to help you practice the technical aspects of photography, but it provides insights about how to approach photojournalism and how to create a narrative.

MasterClass Adventure Photography Key Takeaways

Jimmy Chin has created an inspiring and exciting class! This class provides an inside look into Jimmy’s process and what his photography means to him. The class takes on everything from the technical aspects of using natural light to understanding different lenses, modes, and depth of field. But the class also really focuses on how to create a story, plan your shots, and how to succeed in the world of commercial photography. Lastly, the class also does a few detailed lessons on Jimmy’s editing process.

Photography is a vehicle to give you access to the world.

What I found really beneficial for this class was how often Jimmy used his own photos to walk through his thought process for the shoot and how he captured the image. One example is an image just after he and his team reached the peak of Mount Everest. He talks about how on the way down he only took about 10 frames, which was not normal for a two-day shoot. Since it is often such a high stakes environment, his focus is often on the climb which highlights the training and trust you must have in your camera, your photography skills, and decision making to take these amazing pictures while also staying safe.

Final Thoughts Jimmy Chin’s MasterClass

I was in love with this class from the very beginning! Jimmy Chin has created a fantastic class that really takes an inside look at his process and the ethos behind it.
