The MasterClass Instructor – Robin Roberts

This class opens with an inspiring look into who Robin Roberts is and what she has accomplished throughout her career as a television journalist. The first lesson provides an inside look at how Robin got to where she is today, while also introducing the importance of effective and authentic communication in every aspect of our lives.

Robin Roberts grew up in Mississippi and had dreams of becoming a professional athlete. But like so many dedicated college athletes, she needed a plan B. Inspired by her love for sports, Robin decided to be a sports television broadcaster. She was a sports anchor for local TV stations, and then made her mark at ESPN, where she was a sports anchor for 15 years. Today, Robin Roberts is the anchor of ABC’s Good Morning America.

Robin has been a GMA anchor for more than a decade and has been with the Walt Disney Company for 30 years (and counting—she’s also been recognized as a Disney Legend, the company’s highest honor). She’s interviewed President Barack Obama, reported on the ground in Mississippi during Hurricane Katrina, and spoken publicly about her breast cancer and Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). She was a first in her industry, and thanks to her hard work and mentorship, she won’t be the last.

Robin’s goal for this class is to share her insights to the world of television and how to effectively and authentically communicate. She tackles a variety of topics including, public speaking, body language, interviews, how to be your self, and how to walk through fear. She even gives viewers a behind the scenes look at her daily routine on Good Morning America.

This class is for everyone! No matter what your goals are or what career you are in, effective and authentic communication is crucial. If your goal is to enter into the world of television journalism, then this class will definitely be beneficial but also inspiring. Robin Roberts teaches this class with so much enthusiasm and shares her own story to hopefully inspire others to overcome their challenges and follow their dreams.

MasterClass Workbook – Robin Roberts

The workbook is an excellent addition to the class! It is so well organized and breaks down each lesson into an easy to read format. The workbook contains an overview of each lesson, along with a few assignments that challenge viewers to strengthen their communication skills in a variety of ways. Towards the end of the workbook, Robin focuses on communicating for television. She includes great outlines of the history of the news, types of interviews, and even a section about journalism ethics.

MasterClass Effective and Authentic Communication Key Takeaways

Robin Roberts has created an inspiring and effective class, which focuses on a wide variety of topics. She provides insights to public speaking, interviewing, and how to communicate with coworkers and supervisors. Robin really breaks down these topics, while also providing inspiring and entertaining stories from her own experiences.

What I found so inspiring was Robin’s second lesson, where she talks about her decision to allow the world to see the real her, whether this is her emotional report about Katrina or her decision to tell the world about her fight with cancer. She talks about making your mess your message, which really highlights her point of view on life. She does an amazing job of explaining this outlook, but it is essentially just being able to take the hard things in your life and make something good out of them. She encourages everyone to use their experiences, good or bad, to help others.

Robin always comes back to being real. That could be easier said than done. Robin is a confident woman who is at ease in front of the camera, but you may not have the same luck. You know what, though? That’s okay.

This class also takes the time to provide great insights to broadcast journalism. She takes viewers behind the scenes at Good Morning America, analyzes some of her favorite interviews, and gives advice on how to create authentic journalism. She also talks about how to create a balance between objective news reporting and sharing ones personal life with the world.

Final Thoughts on Robin Roberts’ MasterClass
