This is a review of the Lynnette M and Ryan C Teach Mixology course from MasterClass!

The MasterClass Instructors – Lynnette Marrero and Ryan Chetiyawardana (Mr. Lyan)

This class opens with an introduction to Lynnette and Mr. Lyan’s backgrounds and philosophies’ of mixology. Both are professionals in mixology, but come from different backgrounds and have different experiences that they bring to their recipes. The introduction brings new insights to mixology. Both express their love for making drinks for the one’s they love and how this form of expression and creativity can bring communities together. Lynnette Marrero and Ryan Chetiyawardana, are both professionals in their field. They are MasterClass instructors because of their fine tuned techniques and their ability to challenge the traditional methods of mixology. They both bring new life to cocktail making and challenge each other to explore new flavors.

Lynnette Marrero found herself right in the middle of the craft cocktail renaissance and has since become one of the industry’s pioneering leaders and mentors. She’s led by example when it comes to the idea that women should be shaping cocktail culture: In 2011, Lynnette partnered with fellow New York bartender Ivy Mix to found Speed Rack, the nation’s first and only all-female speed-bartending competition where all proceeds go toward breast cancer research and prevention. Growing up in the United Kingdom, Ryan delved into both the social and scientific side of cocktail bars and drew inspiration from his time spent studying both biology and the culinary arts. While many bars follow a standard methodology of making everything to order in front of their guests, Ryan innovated ways to serve avant-garde cocktails in an approachable manner that emphasized sustainability, where much of the magic is done behind the scenes.

Lynnette and Mr. Lyan designed this class to share their knowledge and provide a foundation for cocktail mixing, while also encouraging viewers to break boundaries and add their own spin on these classic cocktails.

Mixology – Who is it for?

This class is for all levels of experience with mixology. Lynnette and Mr. Lyan’s ability to share their knowledge makes this class informative and easy to understand. The class explores all kinds of cocktails, including everything from lemonade to an inspiring Beeswax Old Fashioned. The class begins with a great foundation regarding the important of understanding ones’ own palate and continues to challenge viewers to modify recipes to bring out different notes in your spirits.

This class is for people who love food, people who love getting together with their friends. Cocktails do have this kind of magic about them and there is something really fun about getting your friends together and just kinda throwing this all into the mix.

With regards to ingredients and tools, Lynnette and Mr. Lyan both have a variety of spirits and mixing tools, but do an excellent job of incorporating different suggestions for substitutions. They even encourage viewers to use the ingredients and tools they have around their house! Not everyone has the fancy mixology tool kit of stirrers and jiggers, but the class does use common measurements so you can recreate these cocktails as long as you have something to measure with, something to stir with, and something to strain with. They suggest using anything from a chopstick to stir, to tea strainers to strain.

MasterClass Workbook – Lynnette and Mr. Lyan

The workbook is a great addition to this class. It outlines every recipe and method shown in the class so you can reference it when you want to make your favorite cocktails again! Each recipe provides a small insight to the heritage behind each drink, the ingredients, and the methods demonstrated in the videos. Not only does this workbook outline each drink recipe but it beings with a great introduction to how to choose different spirits, what tools are required, and it even has a great section for what to use when you don’t have specific bar tools.

MasterClass Mixology Takeaways

This class is full of brilliant personalities, collaboration, and creativity. Lynnette and Mr. Lyan have created a fantastic class where they are not only sharing the knowledge they have gained from their experiences with us, but are also exploring each others pallets and techniques throughout this class. Having both professionals work together in this class provides different techniques and styles for the same basic drink. I found it fascinating how Lynnette and Mr. Lyan were able to each bring their unique spin to classic drinks, while also using this as a tool to inspire their viewers to explore outside the traditional recipes to create something completely new. Aspiring mixologists will love Lynnette and Mr. Lyan’s step by step recipes that put new spins on traditional cocktails, while also providing recipes specifically designed for easy serving at your next party or family gathering.

Final thoughts on Lynnette Marrero and Ryan Chetiyawardana’s MasterClass

I thought this class was fantastic! It may help to have some of the bar tools, like a cocktail shaker or jiggers, but the workbook does do an excellent job of providing alternatives that can easily be found at home. This class really was created for viewers of all experience levels. Whether you are looking to fine tune your skills, get inspiration, or just learn the basics, this class is worth your while.
