Everything in my November 2017 box!

I picked Science Fiction this month. My box includes one (1) newly released book, plus several bookish goods as well as the fantasy add-on.

FYI – the bookish goods are the same over all the subscriptions. Here are the books in the other subscriptions (all hardcover prices):

The Spark By David Drake ($16.51)

NEW STANDALONE NOVEL BY SF MASTER DAVID DRAKE. In a violent world in which civilization has fallen and monsters roam, a young hero will rise.

In the time of the Ancients the universe was united—but that was so far in the past that not even memory remains, only the broken artifacts that a few Makers can reshape into their original uses. What survives is shattered into enclaves—some tiny, some ruined, some wild.

Into the gaps between settlements, and onto the Road that connects all human reality and the reality that is not human and may never have been human, have crept monsters. Some creatures are men, twisted into inhuman evil; some of them are alien to Mankind—

And there are things which are hostile to all life, things which will raven and kill until they are stopped.

A Leader has arisen, welding the scattered human settlements together in peace and safety and smashing the enemies of order with an iron fist. In his capital, Dun Add, the Leader provides law and justice. In the universe beyond, his Champions advance—and enforce—the return of civilization.

Pal, a youth from the sticks, has come to Dun Add to become a Champion. Pal is a bit of a Maker, and in his rural home he’s been able to think of himself as a warrior because he can wield the weapons of the Ancient civilization.

Pal has no idea of what he’s really getting into in Dun Add. On the other hand, the Leader and Dun Add have no real idea of what might be inside this hayseed with high hopes.

THE SPARK: A story of hope and violence and courage. And especially, a story of determination.

Believable characters in an engaging narrative, set in an intriguing world. It has all the ingredients of a great and unforgettable story!

I always look forward to the annotations from the author…

It makes reading a more fun and exciting experience!

I like the author’s take on the sci-fi genre. Anyone who likes reading about adventures will love this book too. Too bad it’s a stand-alone novel because I want to read more about Pal, the main character!

A Box, a Pocket, a Spaceman by E. Catherine Tobler. An additional read from Great Jones Street!

Gotta love short stories! It’s a quick yet entertaining read, something you can easily bring wherever you go.

Each book from PageHabit also comes with a letter from the author. This one is quite long!

PageHabit Bookmark. A bookmark printed on high-quality paper.

Reading one book is like eating one potato chip.

I agree!

The City Of Brass By S.A. Chakraborty ($16.59)

“An extravagant feast of a book—spicy and bloody, dizzyingly magical, and still, somehow, utterly believable.” –Laini Taylor, New York Times bestselling author of Strange the Dreamer

Step into The City of Brass, the spellbinding debut from S. A. Chakraborty, an imaginative alchemy of The Golem and the Jinni, The Grace of Kings, and Uprooted, in which the future of a magical Middle Eastern kingdom rests in the hands of a clever and defiant young con artist with miraculous healing gifts.

Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of eighteenth-century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trades she uses to get by—palm readings, zars, and a mysterious gift for healing—are all tricks, both the means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles and a reliable way to survive.

But when Nahri accidentally summons Dara, an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior, to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to reconsider her beliefs. For Dara tells Nahri an extraordinary tale: across hot, windswept sands teeming with creatures of fire and rivers where the mythical marid sleep, past ruins of once-magnificent human metropolises and mountains where the circling birds of prey are more than what they seem, lies Daevabad, the legendary city of brass—a city to which Nahri is irrevocably bound.

In Daevabad, within gilded brass walls laced with enchantments and behind the six gates of the six djinn tribes, old resentments run deep. And when Nahri decides to enter this world, her arrival threatens to ignite a war that has been simmering for centuries.

Spurning Dara’s warning of the treachery surrounding her, she embarks on a hesitant friendship with Alizayd, an idealistic prince who dreams of revolutionizing his father’s corrupt regime. All too soon, Nahri learns that true power is fierce and brutal. That magic cannot shield her from the dangerous web of court politics. That even the cleverest of schemes can have deadly consequences.

After all, there is a reason they say to be careful what you wish for . . .

It’s my add-on for this month and I think I made the right decision for choosing Fantasy.

It’s an entertaining read. The story is beautifully detailed, and the characters are all interesting too!

I like that apart from fantasy, it also involves cultural heritage and a bit of romance.

Of course, it contains annotations from the author.

It’s always nice reading these fun trivia which are not just about the story, but the author’s writing journey too!

This is just one part of a trilogy. I’m looking forward to the next books!

Canvas Tote Bag. A lightweight bag I can use to stash my books and other geeky goodies!

The illustration is pretty awesome. The only road leads to the library!

Kikkerland Fresnel Bookmark Magnifier ($6.27) A super thin and flat magnifier.

It even has a ribbon, making it a nice bookmark too!

Yep, it does the job!

Another fun haul from Page Habit! This subscription is fun because it has a lot of genres available and it’s totally up to you to choose which you want to receive. The add-ons are a great idea too, because there’s no such thing as receiving too many books. Even the extras they throw in are all awesome! Such a great subscription for its price and charitable mission.
