The Target Art & Craft Kit is a monthly art & craft subscription for kids ages 6-10. You’ll receive a different pre-packaged crafting activity each month shipped from Target for $14.99.

Like the previous months, we received a single commercially available craft kit.

It arrived much like an Amazon package does, shipped in a larger cardboard box with bubble packs – the inventory tag was placed over the kit name on ours, so you may need some adhesive remover (orange oil) to clean a kit up for gifting.

TIPS: Use your Target Red Card for a discount. Plus, be sure to subscribe to the kit for an additional 5% off!

The Original Spirograph Deluxe Set retails for $24.99 at Target. This is the best deal yet from this subscription!

This craft kit has everything you need to make thousands of designs using the Spirograph wheels.

Everything in the kit! Paper, the instructions, all the wheels, markers, rings, and new Spiro-Putty.

It includes a very detailed instruction booklet to get you started. You can recreate any of the dozens of designs pictured by using the ring, wheels and pens described. It tells you which holes to use in each step, with a short narrative to further describe the process.

It also includes a set of basic instructions, introducing the numbering system used to describe the parts and wholes. The kit now includes some spiro-putty to hold your ring in place while you draw.

A simplified section shows the patterns created using a single wheel and one hole. Even here, there is a lot of variation possible.

In addition to some drawing paper and the instruction booklet, the kit includes 2 rings, 15 wheels, 5 shaped inserts, spiro-putty, and red, blue, and green pens.

The instructions are easy to follow, and the set up isn’t complicated. It is a little tricky to make out the small numbers on the clear pieces, but they are in order, so this isn’t a tough challenge to overcome. It takes a few tries to get the movement of the wheel down – even the round wheels move in an odd way with the pen off-center. As a result, you have to allow the pen to drift away from the edge of the ring while maintaining a circular motion. The tendency is to move in the direction the pen moves, but this can cause the gears to skip, making your pen’s pathway jump. It is good to do a few practice runs until you can trace at a quick pace — going too slow can release too much ink into oft-crossed spots, making the paper tear easily. It takes a bit of skill.

This was a fun kit to receive, and it is especially great for kids into art, patterns, math, or mandalas. It is gender neutral and doesn’t require any specialized refills, so a creative kid could certainly stay entertained with this for quite a while. We got a big break on the price, paying as much as Target asks at retail, but it is a reasonable price for this kit. Our kids love spin art and similar drawing tool toys, so this is sure to be a big hit (it is getting stowed away for Christmas)! Shh, don’t tell!
