The information card tells a little bit about all the goodies in the box.

Everything in the August OwlCrate JR. box!

FYI – my 8 year old daughter wrote the rest of this review! I edited nothing.

Acorn Button Pin: A cute little pin with an acorn and two leaves on it. The background is a nice sky-blue.

The Apprentice Witch by James Nicol  ($11.59): This is a really great book!

A special middle grade debut of magic and courage in a world of witches, written with the charm and enchantment of Circus Mirandus and The Apothecary.

Arianwyn has flunked her witch’s assessment: She’s doomed. Declared an apprentice and sent to the town of Lull in disgrace, she may never become a real witch– much to the glee of her arch-rival, Gimma.

But remote Lull is not as boring as it seems. Strange things are sighted in the woods, a dangerous infestation of hex creeps throughout the town, and a mysterious magical visitor arrives with his eye on her.

With every spirit banished, creature helped, and spell cast, Arianwyn starts to get the hang of being a witch–even if she’s only an apprentice. But the worst still lies ahead. For a sinister darkness has begun to haunt her spells, and there may be much more at stake than just her pride . . . for Arianwyn and the entire land.

The author made lots of fantastic creatures, like snotlings and crawlers.

A surprise awaits at the turn of literally every page!

One of the best parts is when they made spells by sketching out glyphs (special symbols) into the ground, air, or something else with their finger.

Great for people who are tired of the classic fairy tales with witches as bad guys.

Also included in the crate is a letter and autograph from the author.

There is also a fun activity called “The Apprentice Witch Word Blanks.”

And at the back of it is an Apprenticeship Acceptance Letter. It’s like madlibs and madlibs are very funny.

Ooly Note Pals Mini Mushrooms Sticky Tabs ($1.99): Adorable little mushrooms!

These are perfect if you love hanging out in the woods and writing or sketching in your journal or notebook.

The mushroom colors are red with white polka dots, red with pink polka dots, stripy yellow, orange with polka dots, and yellow with polka dots. They have a very interesting range of color combinations.

Rory’s Story Cubes Enchanted Story Cubes ($6.89): What will happen next in your story? Roll the dice to find out!

Each side has different drawings which includes an old woman, a well, some trees…

…and many more! The story possibilities are endless, causing endless fun!

This is a creative game that can be enjoyed alone or with friends and family.

Harry Potter Forbidden Forest Exclusive Bookmark: With an emerald-green string tied in a lark’s head knot around the top, this bookmark is both pretty and functional at the same time.

The knot at the top stops the bookmark from slipping inside and coming out of the bottom of the book. The end of the knot is fluffy and soft!

Copernicus Toys Crystal Growing Giant Sequoia ($7) This is SUPER COOL and the crystals are SO FLUFFY, they feel just like cotton candy, except you can’t eat them!

Here are all the materials that came in the kit.

There is also a sheet with instructions.

Ours had some white and blue crystals on them, making it look way different than a normal tree. The terraforming solution travels up the tree fairly quickly, so after that move it from the shade out into the sunlight to help it evaporate!

Back to Brandy (much older than 8 years old): My daughter was in love with this box, and read the entire book in a few days. The value of the items, excluding the button pin, activities, and bookmark was about $27.50. With a shipped price of about $35 this is falling a bit short for us still, but the attraction for her is undeniable. This month featured an author’s letter with loopy print, and I think typical middle grade readers would have no trouble reading it so I’m hoping that trend continues. I was actually quite hoping for another patch in this box so perhaps there will be more in future boxes. I can just envision a delightful little book club with everyone having their patches on their sash reading more books! Overall a win, so we’re happy with the box.

The theme next month is THE GREAT OUTDOORS!
