Thousand Oaks Barrel Co. Whiskey Making Kit: The main item in the kit is a great little wooden cask. It is constructed of solid wood with a varnished exterior. Riveted steel hoops and tension from the heads and flexed staves hold it together. It is an American style (6 hoop) barrel. It comes with a detachable spigot and bung.
Included with the kit is a funnel for transferring your liquor, cards for tracking your aged booze, and a cleaning tablet for prepping and storing the cask. The cask needs to be filled with liquid when stored, to avoid drying out.
A glass bottle with stopper is also included for storing and serving your aged liquor while you prepare your next batch.
The CASK kit looks like a lot of fun! The barrel itself is beautiful and well-constructed, a great way to serve whiskey or cognac at a holiday party. The spigot looks fairly primitive, and the makers went a little wild with the wood glue. After giving it a good rinse and scrubbing the spigot, I think I might run a bottle of wine or sherry through and then fill’r up with some mid-shelf whiskey to sit for awhile. I think the part I like the best is that the cask can sit innocuously on a shelf, making a lovely decoration – with only you knowing how very practical it is!
