Doodle Crate is a member of the KiwiCo family geared toward kids 9+.  It inspires young makers to learn new skills and gain creative confidence through craft and art projects by teaching them basic and intermediate techniques of a new artistic medium each month.

Though geared toward kids, Doodle Crate is gender neutral and also excellent for anyone (even adults) wanting a craft subscription.  In our experience, this is the best “arts and crafts” box for older kids, tweens, teens, and adults – the end result is nearly always something you will want to save!

This month’s project: a colorful scratch art lantern!

Every crate comes with everything you need to complete the project (except for a few basic items from your home), as well as a booklet.  Doodle Crate tends to focus on a single craft and contains only what you’ll need for the project.

The booklet has excellent, textbook quality background on the subject matter of the project.  It’s loaded with high-quality pictures and illustrations to both give you ideas and help you along.  Doodle Crate is great at providing perspective and inspiration for their projects.

The booklet walks through the project step-by-step in great detail.  There are lots of pointers and helpful tips located throughout, and the designers are good at anticipating areas of potential confusion or difficulty, providing suggestions and work-arounds.

Like many Doodle Crate projects, this one has some templates and project suggestions, but it also leaves room for a lot of creativity.

doodle-crate-october-2016-1 My daughter was able to complete this one start to finish while dad was tending to a sick baby – so not many assembly photos! She pounced the black paint onto clear plastic triangles and let those dry.

Ultimately those triangles formed the sides of the lantern. She needed a bit of help assembling that, but did all of the scratch art herself, cleaning up the reverse side where she had accidentally gotten paint on it, and everything. She’s nearly 8 and really starting to be just the right age for this box.

doodle-crate-october-2016-2Several different gel papers were included to create different light effects.

doodle-crate-october-2016-1 We think it turned out amazing, and so does she!

doodle-crate-october-2016-2 The three sides of the lantern are held st the top by a silicone band, which catches the light for a great glow.

doodle-crate-october-2016-3Spooky! Love that this craft was for October, we think it lent itself really well to the art our daughter chose – Halloween art! We can get more transparencies to create more art for other seasons, or unfold it and pack it up flat after Halloween is over and save it until next year – I really think this is a keeper!
