Bokksu September 2016 Subscription Box Review + Coupon

Bokksu is a premium snack box that features authentic Japanese snacks, as well as a tea pairing to go with it. The items are what you can’t easily find here across the pond, so trying them is a real treat and always a fun experience! I love learning about the different regions of Japan, too. Last month’s box was my first and I really enjoyed it, so I’m excited to see what this month has in store.

First look! The bright orange colour of Bokksu always makes me smile.

September focuses on Kyushu — one of the southern regions of Japan. In ancient times, it was made up of nine provinces — kyushu literally means “nine provinces.”

The fold out card is laid out clearly and includes translations of all the items as well as interesting facts about why they were selected. A new addition to the page is allergy information on some of the basic allergens, which is appreciated!

Dondo Age Kyushu These are rice crackers that have a unique puffed up bowl shape to them. They are crunchy but not too hard, and have a sweet soy sauce flavour to them. I liked how sweet they were.

Cruz These wafer sandwiches come from the Nagasaki, which is one of the port cities. Nagasaki traded frequently with Portuguese, which explains the name! (Portuguese for “cross”). These wafer sandwiches are very thin, and have an equally thin layer of filling. The one above is strawberry, which I enjoyed most. The wafer itself wasn’t sweetened at all, which complemented the sweetness of the strawberry inside. The original (upper left) has white chocolate and ginger inside, and the coffee (upper right) had a strong but pleasant espresso finish in both the wafer and filling.

Bontaname This chewy candy is made of pomelo from Kagoshima. Pomelo tastes like a sweeter grapefruit; I don’t love grapefruit but I found these to be much sweeter. The plastic wrapper around each candy is actually edible — it dissolves in your mouth almost instantly!

Mango Chiffon Cake These were my favourite thing in the box! The very soft, fluffy cake has a mango jam filling that is so delicious. The mangoes used are from Nojiri in Miyazaki prefecture.

Kurobou Meimon The taste of these reminds me a lot of a snack we received in last month’s box, the Kurohachi Karinto — it’s likely because of the black sugar used in both. It has this great burnt sugar flavour to it, and the texture of these is really unique — the outside is crispy, but the inside is soft and moist. I really enjoyed these, too!

Bokksu always includes a tea pairing! This month’s tea is kukicha, which is twig tea. It’s a green tea but it’s made of stems, stalks, and twigs from sencha which are deep steamed. The flavour is much milder than some of the other teas Bokksu has sent, so it was more my taste.

This month’s Bokksu was jam-packed with a variety of treats. Everything was new to me, and I found a few new favourites! Bokksu always succeeds in bringing high quality snacks right from Japan, and there’s always something in it I wouldn’t normally try for myself. It’s a refreshing change from the usual Japan snack boxes which just include candy. I really feel like I’m being sent a piece of Japan every month!
