The Austin Bat Box is a monthly indie and artisan subscription box from Austin TX! Every month you’ll receive 4-5 items that coordinate with that month’s theme. Items range from food and beverages, handmade artisan items, art, music, fashion items, decor, jewelry, games, beauty products, and a whole bunch of weird stuff – because let’s face it, it’s Austin!
I thought the name stemmed from the keep Austin weird campaign (batty=weird), but the box is named after their local bat colony. Also weird.
The theme for July is the Austin-American Summer! Don’t forget – everything is made in Austin! I love how Austin Batbox showcases local craftspeople, artisans, musicians, and businesses that I’ve never heard of – and some that I’m always like wow, they’re from Austin! A subscription would make a really awesome gift for anyone who either loves Austin, weird stuff, or even is just a SXSW addict!
Happy Birthday BatBox!
All the information is on the card – and most importantly the makers’ websites!
This looked like a fun box!
The items came in their own bag and were wrapped tissue paper.
Everything in the July 2016 Austin Bat Box!
Zen Soap Co Handcrafted Rustic Rum Zen Soap ($6) & Natural Wood Soap Dish ($10): This soap has a great scent and is made with sustainable palm oil, coconut oil, shea butter, indigo powder, and fragrance oil. The fragrance is great! We really needed one of these soap dishes too to help preserve soap in the tub!
Lavande Farm Lavender Mosquito Spray ($10) Lavender really works to protect against mosquitos! I thought the inclusion of this product was super timely with the dangers of mosquito-borne disease heightened in the summer months. Here’s Lavande’s explanation of how this works:
Lavender disturbs the mosquito’s nervous system, preventing it from landing, and provides you and your loved ones with roughly five hours of beautifully scented protection. You can also use this spray around the house to freshen linens, your dog, or in the AC vent to freshen the whole house.
Since we have (and use) lavender linen spray, we’ll keep this right next to the patio doors for extra (and natural) bug protection. I really needed this – I have sweet meat!
Granny Good Fish (Brenda Armistead) Ceramic Texan Bat Season Kitchen Art: The artist of the month! I absolutely LOVE the design with the bat square on Austin, love this artisan, and loved that they called it kitchen art instead of a magnet.
And this magnet is serious and will hold lots on the fridge!
Stubb’s Bar-B-Q Spice Rub ($4.23) I’ve used this plenty of times! It has a great smokey flavor in a paprika-based rub. It’s excellent for rubbing into meat prior to cooking/saucing!
Stubb’s Pork All-Natural Pork Rub ($5.9) This is perfect for tenderloin! It has chile, lime, paprika, mustard, garlic, red pepper, and of course, spices!
I had no idea that Stubb’s was from Austin – my aunt & uncle are the biggest Stubb’s fans and always stock it in their house. FYI regarding the prices, Stubb’s gives the Amazon shop for buying these products, hence the odd pricing. They’re probably $6-7 per bottle as singles.
What a great all-stars box for BatBox’s birthday! It’s hard to value the box with the exclusive art piece – about $55 or so, which was really fantastic. Everything will be used and I am really in love with the exclusive kitchen art!
