yummy bazaar mini sampler may 2016 box

Yummy Bazaar delivers gourmet food items to your door monthly.  This Destination Food Club is available in a large Full Experience size and mini Sampler size.  With the Full Experience you’ll get 6-8 full sized gourmet items from your destination for $35.95.  The Sampler subscription sends 6-8 sample sizes for $9.95.  While the Full Experience Box focuses on a different country each month, the Sampler Box has a monthly World Theme that is described as featuring products from 2-3 different countries each month — some months include more destinations.

This review covers the Sampler Box for May 2016 – only $9.95 per month!

The packaging is a bit simpler than the Full Experience Box, but you still get an info sheet detailing the contents of the box.

The sheet may borrow some of the imagery from the Full Experience box, but the products and destinations can be very different.  This box did include a pair of items from Russia!

The info card details the products.  The origin of each item is provided — This month covered a lot of real estate, visiting Spain, the USA, France, Japan, Korea, and Russia!

Everything in the box.  This month’s Mini included items from six countries, covering three continents!

Magya Vostoka Russian Borscht Seasoning (Russia):  A powdered seasoning with dried beet, aromatics, and spices.  It takes the guesswork out of preparing this most traditional of Russian staples.

Recipe included.  There are as many variations on borscht as there are Russians.  Brandy loves soup so she can’t wait to try this one!

Palais Des Thes Black Tea (France):  We received a straight Himalayan black tea, as well as an Earl Grey — my fav! These are high end teas!

Алёнка (Alenka):  Alionka (and various forms thereof) is a popular generic term for various candy bars throughout the Slavic countries.  The only thing they have in common is the association with a sometimes creepy little girl in a babushka.

Russian Candy Box April 2016 (16)

This version has a dark chocolate coating, and a thick layer of chocolate cream wedged between two sheets of crisp wafer cookie.  I was impressed with the thickness of both the interior cream and the chocolate coating.

Next by Nature Dark Chocolate Coconut (USA) Goodies by this company are always tasty! The coconut was fresh and firm and also, coated with dark chocolate!

D-Plus Chocolate Pastry Roll (Japan) Yummy! Super soft (my daughter says it’s like a potato roll!) and sweet, made like a cinnamon roll in technique but with a chocolate innards!

There is some sort of alcohol packet to preserve the moisture of the roll — it advises waiting a few minutes after opening to “soften” the experience.

Orion Boongabbang Cake (Korea) The Information card said something about this sponge cake being like a moon pie but it’s not! It’s a squishy and sweet cake (in fish form) pumped full of squidgy chocolate goodness.

It’s like a swirled cake!

Torres Caviar Potato Chips (Spain):  I’ve tried the truffle version of Torres chips, and these have a similarly unctuous composition.  The caviar is very mild, but it adds an ever so slight crustacean flavor — the real effect is one of texture.  After the initial bite, the chips have an almost creamy flavor which I attribute to the caviar, as it wasn’t present in the truffled version.

The Mini Box is a fun way to try some delicious snacks from all over the place.  It doesn’t have the uniform theming of the Full Experience, but it is a good way to get your international food fix and a really good deal at less than $10 per month!
