Comic Bento is a monthly comic book subscription service that delivers graphic novels each month.  The books come from a multitude of different publishers and every month you’ll receive at least $60 in books.

064

Special care is given to each box.  To make keep the books from jostling about, Comic Bento uses air cushions and has all books packed together in plastic with cardboard to keep everything straight.

068

Four books, all from different publishers.  Comic Bento did well in bringing variety to their offering this month.

070

Comic Bento includes a 2-sided card that gives you some insight into the books they sent.  They also give some backstory as to why they chose the books within the subscription box.

073

This month has a “Powerless” theme.  Each book features a main character that does not have superpowers.

089

Stumptown – $29.99 – Oni Press.  Written by Greg Rucka with art by Matthew Southworth.  Greg Rucka is an incredible writer and this book is a testament to his excellent work.

From Eisner Award-winning writer Greg Rucka and acclaimed artist Matthew Southworth comes a NEW Stumptown mystery! Dex Parios has finally opened her own office, and her first case is to find rock star Mim Bracca’s baby- her prized guitar, which disappeared after her band Tailhook’s Portland show. Mim has no leads, and she doesn’t want to go to the police- but Dex needs the case, and besides, it shouldn’t be that hard to find a missing guitar. As  long as the D.E.A. doesn’t get involved…or the Skinheads…

078

Ordinary People – $14.99 – Titan Comics.  Written by Rob Williams and art by D’Israeli.  This book also includes a forward by the legendary Warren Ellis.

Imagine a world where everyone has superpowers. That is, except you. You are the same old miserable, lonely loser you’ve always been – always ordinary. Welcome to the world of Michael Fisher. From the irradiated gamma-rayed genius of Rob Williams and D’Israeli comes the collection of one of the most critically acclaimed and interesting takes on the superhero genre in a long time!

083

Ninjak: Weaponeer  – $9.99 – Valiant Comics.  This book is from the creative team of Matt Kindt, Clay Mann, Butch Guice and Juan Jose Ryp.  The interiors of this book are strikingly violent yet beautiful.

Every master spy…has to start somewhere. Then: Meet inexperienced MI-6 recruit Colin King on his first mission in the field as he learns the basics of spycraft and counterintelligence, and develops a volatile relationship with his first handler. Now: Colin Kin is Ninjak: the world’s foremost intelligence operative, weapons expert, and mater assassin…and he’s hunting the Shadow Seven – a secret cabal of shinobi masters with mysterious ties to his training and tragic past.
086Blackcross – $19.99 – Dynamite Entertainment.  Written by comic book legend Warren Ellis, this comic book series comes from the pages of Project Superpowers.  The gritty and dark art looks amazing and fits Ellis’ writing incredibly well.

All small towns have secrets. All small towns have ghosts. Blackcross, in America’s Pacific Northwest, has more secrets than most…and it is being haunted by something impossible. Something is reaching out form the other side of the night through the forest and mists of this remote town to grasp at the hearts of a handful of people…and they may not discover why they’re being hunted until it’s much too late. Forget what you think you know, as award-winning writer Warren Ellis and artist Colton Worley take readers on a sinister journey away from the brightly-clad heroes of the Golden Age, and into the shadows of Blackcross; a supernatural noir thriller of ordinary people stalked by an otherworldly killer.

Comic Bento is such an awesome value!  All four of these books were packaged so well together and arrived in spectacular condition.  As stated earlier, there is a theme but there’s also a ton of variety, and the theming of this box is pretty unique amongst comic subscriptions. I thought the curator’s notes really brought the theme together, and that made this box even more awesome!
