Smart Art Box is an ingenious way to exercise your creative juices. A new medium is introduced each month along with the tools needed to complete the project. A quick step by step is included along with tips for the new and seasoned.
The artwork is beautiful! The February project is Venetian Masks.
I have to let you in on a little secret. I’m scared of masks. My sister completed this project for me.
The project guide includes a great write up on the art history, explaining how the project tools work, and step by step directions.
The project tools for February look great. My fingers were aching to paint, but the masks… Smart Art thoughtfully included two White Paper Masks. They are Colombina Half Masks ($5.98) that are ready to be painted and get you in the mood to celebrate the Venetian Carnival.
My sister found it to be a joy to work with the Turner Acrylic Gouache Set of 6 ($48.25/retail, $14.39/sale). The paint is quick drying and water resistant once dried. It was easy to apply to the mask. The colors start off opaque and finish as a velvety matte.
My sister appreciated that two paint brushes were included. The Ebony Short Handle Round 4″ Brush ($10.50/retail, sale $3.59), and the Wash 1/2″ ($11.25/retail, Sale $5.29) were the only brushes she used for the project. The brushes feature Teijin fiber hair and are attached to red wood handles. They are considered to be one of the best brushes in the world. She found them to be wonderful to work with while painting the mask.
The Creative Mark Ultimate Glitter Glue in Bronze ($1.75/retail, $0.99/sale) provides the finishing touch. The tip is an ultra fine tip allowing for detailed designs. It is quick drying.
My sister declined to be photographed. J decorated the male mask using sponge brushes, and the Turner Acrylic Gouache Paint included in the kit. He also used a little of the glitter glue. He looks quite pleased with his work.
My sister’s mask is waiting to dry!
She went with a two toned look and used the glitter to create a dot design around the eyes.
J decided to go out in color. He was proud of himself for creating a beautiful shade of purple. The green gives it a slight Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle look.
The February 2016 Smart Art Box was a hit with both my sister and my son. They had a wonderful time decorating the masks together. My sister collects Venetian masks and was excited to have the opportunity to make her own. She appreciated the quality of the products and the directions were easy to follow. I love art and craft boxes because they introduce me to new mediums and include the necessary items to complete a project. We are already discussing our design for the March box!

I love J’s mask! The colors look so beautiful together!!
That should be a very nice collection of Venetiaan masks your sist collects, When we went to Venice during our honeymoon, we got Murano glasses instead. I did pick up a mini venetian mask and mini ventetian mask jewelry box likely not made in Italy but it is where we got it that counts I do not mind the original origin most of the time provided the quality is top notch!
I try not to look! I am sure she thinks they are nice. Venice 🙂 Sounds wonderful.
