Bookspan’s Book of the Month Club is a  monthly book subscription box. Each month their panel of Judges selects 5 books, which they announce on the first of the month, and members have six days to decide which book (or books) they would like to receive. All books are shipped at the same time, so members can read and participate in their discussion forums as a group. One book per month is included in the membership fee, and members can purchase up to two additional books each month for $9.99 per title. The monthly price is $16.99 per month, $11.99 per month on a year long subscription.  You can get 3 and 12 month ($11.99 per month!) memberships $10 off. Use Book Of The Month Invitation Code BOOK10 as the coupon code for this deal.

Here are the choices for March. I’ve been eyeing up the Book of the Month Club and am excited to have the opportunity to review it.

Craig Ferguson was the guest judge for March.

The March 2016 Book of the Month selections were:

The Moor’s Account, by Laila Lalami (Guest Judge: Craig Ferguson)
The Queen of the Night, by Alexander Chee (Judge: Liberty Hardy)
All Things Cease to Appear, by Elizabeth Brundage (Judge: Leigh Haber)
The Profiteers, by Sally Denton (Judge: Stephen Marche)
A Thousand Naked Strangers, by Kevin Hazzard (Judge: Book of the Month)
I had a hard time deciding! I ended up selecting  The Profiteers, by Sally Denton which happens to be Judge Stephen Marche’s choice.

The books are shrinkwrapped onto cardboard and include a note from the judge.

 It says

Dear Readers, You probably already know that the intersection of money and politics in American democracy is scary. And yet you probably don’t know about the Bechtels. They have changed the world in that sweet spot in between diplomacy, business and government for nearly 100 years, while revealing the minimum possible about who they are. That fact is the scaliest fact of all. Change it. Read The Profiteers.

I love reading history and biographies. This book sounds like the perfect combination.

The Profiteers, by Sally Denton ($19.23)

The tale of the Bechtel family dynasty is a classic American business story. It begins with Warren A. “Dad” Bechtel, who led a consortium that constructed the Hoover Dam. From that auspicious start, the family and its eponymous company would go on to “build the world,” from the construction of airports in Hong Kong and Doha, to pipelines and tunnels in Alaska and Europe, to mining and energy operations around the globe.

Today Bechtel is one of the largest privately held corporations in the world, enriched and empowered by a long history of government contracts and the privatization of public works, made possible by an unprecedented revolving door between its San Francisco headquarters and Washington. Bechtel executives John McCone, Caspar Weinberger, and George P. Shultz segued from leadership at the company to positions as Director of the CIA, Secretary of Defense, and Secretary of State, respectively.

Like all stories of empire building, the rise of Bechtel presents a complex and riveting narrative. In The Profiteers, Sally Denton, whom The New York Times called “a wonderful writer,” exposes Bechtel’s secret world and one of the biggest business and political stories of our time.

I’m on page 50. It’s been a fascinated read that has led me down rabbit holes such as the building of the Hoover Dam.

I noticed that the cover had the Book of the Month logo on it. I don’t recall seeing this in previous reviews.

I picked The Profiteers as well. This is my third month and I love this book club. It has an excellent selection of titles and like yourself I like historical fiction as well as where history intersects with reality. This is the first time I have noticed the Book of the Month embedded on the dust jacket of a selection as well.
