Scent Trunk February 2016 Subscription Box Review & Coupon

Scent Trunk is a fragrance subscription that delivers three hand-picked decants to your mailbox every month. They’re Canadian run and operated but ship to Canada, the US, and the UK for free, and are looking to expand to other countries. Scent Trunk donates 1.5% of all sales to efforts to fight mental illness, which I think is fantastic. Scent Trunk’s cache of fragrances are niche — these won’t be perfumes you can pick up at Sephora. I used to be very into niche perfumes about ten years ago, so I’m excited to dip my toe back in the water!

The packaging is minimalist and sleek. The package was shipped lettermail from Toronto, so it just came in a plain envelope — the sturdy box keeps everything protected and secure. The box contains a black velvet bag with the three decants, as well as description cards which have a place on the back to spray scent. In the past they used to send a small pile of tester strips. Personally, I find spraying fragrance onto a card useless — it’s never indicative of how a scent will actually smell on your body, since your skin’s chemistry will always change a scent. (This is why Burberry Brit smells amazing on my friend Lauren, but smells completely different on me!) For this review, I tried each of the three perfumes on three different days, applying in the morning before work.

White Zagora (95 Euro/$105 USD for 3.3 fl oz) The price on this card seems too high compared to the price on the house’s official website, though I’m actually rather happy as $105 is far more reasonable than $235! I don’t normally choose orientals for myself, as I don’t do well with spicy scents. I’m happy that this one isn’t a traditional oriental on my skin — the peach blossom softens it. Neroli is one of my favourite notes, so I really liked this. It lingered for most of the day and had a pretty good throw — I apply on my neck and I caught the scent throughout the day.

Eau De La Couronne (72 GBP/$100 USD for 3.3 fl oz) This perfume was a huge miss for me even from first sniff from the decant. Iris and gardenia are just way too strongly floral on my skin, and dry down to a powdery scent on my skin. It’s the kind of strong floral that stays around for hours, which is great if you like the scent, but I couldn’t wait to scrub it off at the end of the day. I think I could like this scent more if it just wasn’t as strong.

Pavane No. 2 I wasn’t able to get any information about prices and sizing for this perfume, as it looks like the designer’s website is now defunct. I love the concept of this collection (inspired by music) and more importantly, I love the scent. I love rose and how it smells on me — I didn’t really get any of the lily at all in this, it was just rose. There is a soft aquatic scent at drydown, and the longevity could have been better, but this was my favourite of the three.

Scent Trunk is all about the curation — I don’t think it’s easy to match the perfect perfume with a specific person blindly like this, so I really appreciate how much effort and thought they put into it. Fragrance is such a personal thing, but I’m overall pleased with my first Scent Trunk experience! They do ask you to go and review the scents you’ve received so they can further tailor your selections to your preferences, so I should probably head over and do that. For the price, I think it’s worth it! Niche perfumes are often very costly and I rotate through so many samples and bottles that I likely won’t finish these samples anytime soon, so they will last a long time!
