The handy card give gives the name and maker of each treat, translated to English where necessary.  A short description of each snack is also given.  Take the link to the Treats site to learn more about each item.

Everything in the box.  A veritable bounty of Treats!  Each Treats box has a slightly different balance of items, depending on what kind of snacks the locals like.  We love the unique selections — every package in the box was something we had never tried before (at least not in the exact style or from the same company).

Annie’s Hany Milk Chocolate Peanut Bars:  A cool spin on the “milk chocolate” bar.   Regular chocolate doesn’t stand a chance in the tropics, so this blend of confectioner’s sugar and peanut butter creates a crumbly sweet bar to hold a dose of cocoa.  It is the sweet, powdery texture (it reminds me a bit of the “Black Sands” style treats popular in Russia and Eastern Europe) and little bits of peanut that really stand out.  Nothing like a traditional chocolate bar, but still addictive.

Jack’n’Jill X.O. Classics – Coffee Candy:  I had to cut myself off from these — they are delicious, but they contain some caffeine and shouldn’t be eaten by the bagful.  True coffee flavor without leaving you with coffee mouth after.

Philippine Brand Dried Mango Pineapple Balls:  Chewy, gooey, and really granular, these are like fruit pulp laden gumdrops.  Really nice fruit flavor.  As with the coffee candy, we received a big bag full of individually-wrapped candies. Our kids loved them too, they were a huge hit.

Philippine Brand Dried Mangoes:  Truly delicious, these are the best dried mangoes I’ve had.  They didn’t have any of the piney flavor that sometimes is present, and they were still slightly moist and tender.

Jack ‘n Jill Chippy Flavored Barbecue Corn Chips:  A very familiar texture for anyone who has had Fritos, but these weren’t quite as salty.  The mild barbecue flavor was well balanced and didn’t taste overly artificial.

Nagaraya Hot & Spicy Cracker Nuts: Very similar to Lorenz Nic-Nacs in last month’s box – we think it’s fascinating that shell-covered peanuts are so popular everywhere else, but hard to find in the US, where so many peanuts are grown. These are delicious and Brandy ate all of them in the course of a day. She’s really crazy about them!  They aren’t too spicy, but the texture and sweetness of the coating makes them hard to keep around without devouring.

Regent Snack Golden Sweet Corn:  Sweet corn is a popular special occasion snack in throughout Southeast Asia.  I recall being delighted to see people in Singapore eating cups full of what looked like canned corn as carnival food.   This crunchy treat is made right in the Philippines — it looks light a cheeseball, but it tastes and smells like canned sweet corn or creamed corn.

Boy Bawang Cornick Barbecue Flavor:  Barbecue flavor (not Korean, etc., but similar to generic American chip flavoring barbecue)  is apparently very popular in the Phillippines.  These little kernels have a nice crunch, but they are nowhere as hard as Corn-nuts.

We have been really loving Treats since its inception.  Every edition has some really unique treats from the featured country, as well as local versions of more universally-beloved snacks.  It’s so much fun to see the local branding, packaging, and flavor variations, and to see the local bias toward using particular cereal crops or flavor profiles.  It’s one of our very favorite discover-foreign-foods boxes bectause every item is appealing (nothing too weird included merely for shock value) —  we are able to finish off every bit off with pleasure (we admit – we just got this box and after leaving it on the table for a day, it’s nearly all gone!).

Being half-filipino, I need to say this box looks pretty representative and I think Treats did a great job curating to please everyone! Chippy is classic pinoy! Most of these can be found at asian stores luckily if you have one to get some more. Philipine Mango Brand is the best of the dried mangos. I hope the cracker nuts did not give Brandy gas we occasionally get them in different flavors but they make my other half gassy. Ahem.
