Level Up by Loot Crate September 2015 Review #lvlup

Level Up  is a new subscription from Loot Crate to get great new geek and gamer premium wearable accessories themed along with the current Loot Crate theme. There are 3 options: 2 pairs of themed socks for $9.9, 1 or 2 fashion accessories for lady looters (hairbow, cosmetics, jewelry) for $14.99, and a wearable item like a premium shirt or hat for $14.99.  Unlike their beta month, You can purchase Level Up separately now – and the wearable items (the shirts/hats/etc) are available in ladies’ sizes. Oh one more thing – I haven’t really been sure about the spelling on the name of this box – is it Lvl Up or Level Up? The Hashtag and branding uses LVL Up, the site says Level Up, who knows!

The theme for September was SUMMON.

Socks:

We don’t get the Level Up socks, though you can see them in the card above. September’s were Doctor Strange and Pokémon. These are Bioworld socks but exclusive to Level Up.

Eeveelution Hinge Wallet: Eevee is a fun and cute Pokémon character!

I don’t consider these two items particularly feminine at all (not judging just making an observation!). If you are looking for a very girly gamer subscription this might not be it. It seems like half the items are solidly unisex. 

I thought the customized card in the wallet was a nice touch.

Wearable:

Dragonball Z Shenron Long-Sleeve T-Shirt:  I think the summoning must work better like this.  This right here is the apex of subscription box reviewing.

It’s nice to see a long sleeve shirt, and it’s probably difficult to make the margins for the long sleeved ones work in the regular box. I don’t know anything about this franchise but it’s a cool design! I believe using the chop on the shirt summons the eternal dragon?? 

Because it’s pretty much one franchise per subscription I am finding it hard to be super enthusiastic about Level Up, except when I personally dig the franchise for the ittem. The price is relatively low but the risk is higher than a regular subscription and you don’t get as much stuff. It’s hard not to compare with just subscribing to another geek subscription box. With the huge Supernatural spoiler for the box I was really hoping that one of these items would be Supernatural too – and I am sure WoW fans were hoping for Hearthstone etc. Unfortunately I don’t think it’s enough to know that it’s themed with the regular Loot Crate theme. I think this subscription needs to be skippable (you can cancel online and sign back up, but geez, what a pain! Just give me a skip button already) and maybe even have the monthly franchise for each item spoiled. It wasn’t such a big deal on the Heroes theme – you knew it was going to be a giant superhero! But with a theme like Summon, it’s pretty hard to guess. I did go back and look at the spoilers, and I can in retrospect crumple with shame that I didn’t know the women’s accessory would be Eevee but the spoilers really are quite cryptic.
