june five four club review

Five Four sends T-shirts year round, so I was curious to see what they would offer up for Summer.  This month had a curious selection that did not include any Tees.

Five Four Club is a men’s clothing monthly subscription club – sign up, pick a style profile and your sizes, and get clothes every month. My style profile is a “mix.” This subscription ships at the end of the month, and nearly always arrives in the first few days of the next month. This is technically the May package but we gave up calling it the correct month, so we’re just going to pretend that it’s the June one unless Five Four actually ships out packages on time. Until recently Five Four Club was a retail brand, but now you must be a member in order to purchase clothes in their shop.

Whistler Sock Liners (pictured above) are handy for wearing with those boat shoes and loafers that are designed for bare feet.  I’ve always found that a bit tacky — men should wear socks when not in proximity to water.  Period.

In addition to the Whistler Sock Liners ($12) I received two other items:IMG_4406

Bellhurst ($60):  Five Four updated their style a bit this past year, moving from the urban toward a more wearable, classy style.  Unfortunately, this piece represents a little bit of a backslide.  I’m not a fan of the mixed-pattern front hem – a single pattern would have been a nice accent.  The shirt has a nice feel to it fabric-wise and it may work for those men with more whimsical wardrobe choices.  The pleated cuffs also take me back to junior high — it’s a little L’il Wayne meets Vanilla Ice for me.

Geneva Shorts ($60):  These are nice shorts and a good alternative to the classic white short.  The tailoring is simple and elegant, and the variegated scheme is an interesting twist (and will extend the useful life of the shorts, welcoming the natural graying that occurs with multiple washes).

Five Four usually has one piece I love, one item that is a solid, practical addition to my wardrobe, and one piece that pushes my stylistic boundaries for better or worse.  Though the Bellhurst was a miss for me, I like the other items and enjoy having my tastes challenged from time to time to avoid getting into a rut.

Note from Brandy: I think Tom needs to give this one a more open mind! It looks pretty good here! This arrived in a Five Four newsletter and I think they should include the styling suggestions in the box!
