birchbox man may 2015

The June 2015 Birchbox Man theme was Write Your Own Adventure and was designed to give you a few great travel items. Birchbox Man is a monthly grooming and lifestyle subscription for men. You’ll receive 3-4 samples, plus a lifestyle item. Boxes are $20 per month and you’ll earn points for reviewing the items in the box. You can earn 110 points ($11 in the shop) for picking up a yearly subscription.

It’s important to be prepared for the open road—that’s why we’ve got packing tips and cheap flight hacks, but remember: Don’t be afraid to ditch the itinerary—the best journeys are usually the most unexpected.

The information card gives the details on each item. Subscribers are given a sample choice opportunity via email, and I selected the Carryon Cocktail item.

Everything in my box this month.

Carryon Cocktail Kit – The Old Fashioned ($24) The lifestyle item I selected is a complete travel cocktail set.IMG_4278

It has everything you need to craft two delicious old-fashioned.IMG_4279

The bitters leaked a bit in this package – Birchbox will be replacing it. The only deficiency I see in this kit is that it does actually contain liquid, so you’ll need to remove it and place it in your quart size bag before travel. It would have been neat had they figured out a way to turn it into a crystal form.

A recipe is included, in case you’ve forgotten.

Baxter of California Grooming Lotion ($4.50) A lightweight low-maintenance hair cream that’s great for traveling – gels and pastes need more attention than you may be willing to give while traveling.

Davines SŪ Hair & Body Wash ($6.75) This 2-in-1 combo is great for travel. This brand seems to hunt down really interesting ingredients for its shampoos.  Contains Italian Citrus extracts.

Atelier Cologne Cédrat Enivrant Cologne Absolue ($4) This was a really travel inspired scent, and also went well with the cocktail item I chose.  New fragrances are my favorite item to receive in Birchbox, and I don’t need to buy large bottles, because I have every scent for every occasion.

The soul of this scent lies in its vibrant top notes: cedrat from Morocco, lime from Mexico, and bitter bergamot from Calabria. Heart notes of mint and juniper add some complexity, while grassy base notes of elemi and Haitian vetiver round out the fruity aroma. If your favorite things in life come with a dash of citrus—like the twist of lime in a gin and tonic—this fragrance will strike a chord.

The value of my box this month was around $39 – great for a $20 box – plus I get 10 points for each item I review ($4 back in Birchbox points this month) as well as points on the purchase of my annual subscription. I somehow never see the fruits of these mythical Birchbox points (Brandy uses them all) but she also buys me anything I want from Bespoke Post, so it’s a good trade.
