I recently picked up all of Sephora’s exclusive sets for summer (they were so darling, I could not resist!), and I loved all three of them. Sephora’s Summerstash is $45 and has 9 deluxe samples of perfect for summer favorites. There is a slightly different set sold at Sephora @ JCP for $42, and I picked up one of those for a giveaway (see the differences and how to enter at the bottom)! As the Summerstash set has the absolutely irresistible Deborah Lippmann’s Mermaid’s Dream in the bag, well, I couldn’t not pick this bag up!
Sephora’s Summerstash Review
The Sephora Beauty Bags often have all sorts of terrible comments about the sample sizes. Having spent over a year reviewing beauty products and their values, I have to say, I just don’t entirely agree. The Sephora 2014 Sun Safety Kit had similar comments and I did not agree with the reviews about having low value overall, although certainly the value doesn’t match Sephora’s. My calculation for the Sephora Summer stash beauty kit is $87.34 plus the bag, I have no idea where they came up with $123 for the value, it’s quite a daramatic discrepancy and it left me puzzling whether I forgot an item. Although I absolutely appreciate a full-size item, I also totally love a deluxe sample that’s just enough to use up in a season and move on to something else next season/next year! Not dropping $20 on a Deborah Lippmann glitter polish (seriously, one of my absolute favorites, but it’s super pricey and I don’t necessarily need a whole bottle) is great. Just my opinion!
But Sephora does need a reality check on the values of the samples. I do enjoy the Sephora Favorites collections a whole bunch and this is a new addiction for me this year (only $40 to go until I hit VIB status). I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase especially if I had a VIB coupon. BUT… Birchbox collections (like the newest Birchbox Mermaid box – about $110 in value for $44) do seem to have a higher value ratio. It just depends on what you like and what products you are interested in sampling. Bottom line – I think the bag is a good value and Sephora needs to calculate their stuff like a normal person would! It’s not hard, I do it nearly every single day!
Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil in 12L ($8.55) I love this! I have a mild obsession with colorful eyeliner right now and I didn’t realize this was so gorgeous in person. It’s swatched below but the colors are better IRL!
NARS Travel Size Laguna Bronzing Powder ($13.30) This is a brown with golden shimmer and is so versatile! I could see sweeping this on highlight points and eyes after my makeup is all gone for whatever reason (minus the waterproof mascara and eyeliner in the bag of course!). I think this bag was nicely curated to have some lasting makeup choices and reapplication on the go!
Buxom Divine Goddess Luminizer in Venus ($3.22) I have lots of luminizer but this one has a cooling sensation, which is neat. I’m a huge fan of Buxom, it’s one of my fave brands. This isa glowy non sparkly shimmer but I wish it was larger.
Marc Jacobs Beauty Mini Lash Lifter Mascara in Blacquer ($9.75) I am not the biggest fan of waterproof mascara but that means I don’t even have any right now, so this is perfect for me. I can wear it when I know I’m going to get hit with water. Or save it for the end of summer when I go to have the baby. HAH! This one is a pretty wet mascara.
Deborah Lippman Nail Lacquer in Mermaid’s Dream ($10.80) I have already gone on and on about this. It’s gorgeous. It’s DL. What more do you need to know? Not much.
Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray ($7) For some reason I ordered a full size of this plus this bag. Whatever, it’s fabulous, and now I have a travel size, which I totally need. It’s basically hairspray for your face and you need it.
Stila Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow in Kitten ($18.75 oh so complicated, subtracted value of eye primer from this set to calculate)
Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelee in Berry Bliss ($11.61) This was nice although a bit tough to get out because the jar is so small! If I had long nails I am not sure I could do it. I had some silicone based foundation primer on my hand when I swatched them and I don’t recommend using one with this product (have you ever notice that some of those primers gum up your makeup or other products??).
Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Stained Gloss in New Wave with Lip Brush ($4.36) I believe the full size of this actually comes with the brush. This one is a very bright color, and SUPER pigmented. It’s not going to stay on forever but it’s a fun look. I had really wanted to sample the Lip Tars and I actually didn’t realize this was a different product at all!
Swatches! I have on from left to right: Lip Tar, the Stila shadow, the eye liner, Nars bronzer, and the Cheek Gelee.
I loved how this was a cohesive set of products that I could just put right in the bag and use as a complete (weather & summer activity resistant) look if I wanted!
If you’d like to get your own Sephora Favorites Summerstash you can either visit Sephora online or in store, pick one up at Sephora inside JCP (slightly different, see photo below), or enter the giveaway to win a Sephora Summerstash set (as pictured below – the giveaway is for the JCP version!!!).
The JCP Sephora version sells for $42 and is slightly different! It is without the Josie Maran, Buxom, and Marc Jacobs, but adds a sample of Benefit’s They’re Real Mascara ($7.14) and Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal ($8.20). I calculate the value of the JCP Sephora Summerstash bag at $78.10, again, lower than the retail value of $107, but still a good value compared to the price of the bag. (Seriously, did I miss something in my calculations?) Speaking of “the bag” the Summerstash bag is my fave because it doesn’t have the porthole. It’s an absolutely gorgeous pouch and my daughter (she’s 5) had better keep her grubby little paws off of it.
But seriously, it was the first time I had ever allowed myself to step into the JCP Sephora, because it’s just too convenient. And my kids go wild when there’s makeup to be swatched. We left with blue shadowed hands and little acetate swatches of nail polish. Also…. my son totally stole a blue eyelash curler! I found it while I was in Costco underneath the diaper bag and had to drop it back off. #momlife
Enter the giveaway below! The comment this time is to tell me what’s in your stash of summer beauty faves. I want to know! Obviously if I’m super intrigued I’ll have to pick it up! Have you tried their TOO FACED
Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick? I want that BAD! lol
no but i want to!!!!! i have heard people say they last 5 or 6 hours. they must have lips from a different planet. i’ve never had a lip product last more than an hour!
lol lips from another planet, too funny. 5 to 6 hours is a long time. I’m thinking about getting it however it’s pricey.
Tinted moisturizer with SPF in it and fun, neon nail polish colors.
Sea salt spray! I’m on the hunt for the best one. I have given up trying to style my wavy hair in this MD humidity.
i used the sachajuan today (i live in SS). it made my hair all texturey and calmed some of the crazy bed head frizz! i liked it!!
Anything has got to be better than Bumble and Bumble. That’s at the bottom of my list!
Can I hijack the comments to ask a question I’m dying for the answer for? Brandy I know you’ve gotten a sample of every product known to man in your boxes, so do you have any good recommendation for an under eye cream and/or treatment? Major concerns, under eye bags and dark spots, also those early 30’s fine lines that are starting to creep in. Help!!
i use a variety of anti dark spot stuff. i’m a product rotator!! right now i am loving the caudalie eye cream because it’s so moisturizing and it does not irritate my eyes at all. http://www.birchbox.com/shop/skincare/eye-care/caudalie-premier-cru-eye
usually if i get a specific question like this i will remember if i have an update. i will let you know if i find another (cheaper) one i like just as well. i’m trying very hard to power through samples!!!
Thank You! checking out the Caudalie now. Have you ever tried the Philosophy miracle worker retinol eye repair? It’s also kinda spendy, but definitely cheaper than the caudalie.
i haven’t tried that one. i may have a sample around here somewhere. and i don’t think it’s with my other eye samples, i am not sure where i stuck it! it could be the other philosophy eye stuff. i generally like their stuff but i am not a huge fan or anything. mela-d is the serum i use for dark spots. i have hormonal melasma so i usually stick some dark spot stuff on my face (usually that or the strivectin one, they have different active ingredients) before doing the rest.
There’s many items I haven’t tried yet so not sure which one I should mention.
I not sure what mine would be – but I love getting to spend more time painting my nails all the bright neon colors for summer! – My daughter loves it when I use neon colors! I am still trying to figure out what the best sunscreen for my face is – without making my face break- out – and not make me sweaty!
Beauty Protector – Protect & Detangle leave-in hair detangler/conditioner. Got a sample through Birchbox once and I’m hooked! (:
My must have is my mascara. 🙂
My must have summer beauty product is nail polish on my toes in fun colors like bright pink and tourquoise blue! 🙂
i actually just bought the urban decay all nighter. I’ve used it maybe 3 or 4 times so far, and I’ve loved it every time. I’m excited to see how well it holds my face together in the summer heat.
Pink, coral & teal nail polish, peachy nude lips, dramatic, colorful eyes and loads of bronzer!
I recommend Tarte’s primer! It’s perfect for foundation application in the summer!
My summer beauty must have is Miracle Skin Transformer Spotlight! It is light weight, moisturizing, and provides a subtle bronze glow!
Sunscreen! Paula’s choice makes an excellent one.
My summer must try is the Hawaiian tropic lip balm with SPF. I’m trying to be more careful in the sun.
Ruffian Endless Summer trio.
I want to try the new It cosmetics Powder to Liquid foundation.
My most recent favorite Summer must have is my Blood Orange Lip Butter from The Soap and Paper Factory. It really is smooth as butter, and so addictive I even take it to bed with me.
A summer must product for me has to be the Garnier BB Cream. I haven’t tried any high-end BB creams but I am thinking about trying the Cover FX BB gel
I’m pasty, my must haves are coola products and the tan towels you introduced me to. I’m hooked!
i know! i even responded to another of the comments here that i’m pretty sure that would be *my* answer!!! i just love how easy they are to use!! i never get dark areas or dark hands!!!
Love the UD All Nighter. Is especially great during the hot, humid summers here. Helps to keep makeup from melting off. Got a sample in a box sometime last year and am working on second full size bottle.
Oribe beach wave spray…used my GC from glossybox for this and its quite wonderful…which is too bad cause its kinda pricey! This will totally be my go to sea salt spray this summer!
i need self tanner spray and tanner towelettes.
Nope, it is here- http://www.urbandecay.com/urban-decay/eye-makeup/moondust-eyeshadow/370.html I have it in Moon Rock. They are gorgeous, I want them all. They area really pretty shimmer, but in a more sophisticated way, if that makes any sense.
Ooooh. Well now that I broke the seal on JCP sephora I will have to play with them. Maybe if I limit myself to looking at one product in advance….
Haha! Exactly! It is tough, especially when I used to work in the mall. Due to lunch breaks, I own every pallet they came out with till 2012. LOL
I SO love the new Urban Decay Shimmers. I can’t remember the name.
is it this?

NARS Laguna Bronzing Powder, it looks like a perfect product for summer!
Do you have that special brush? It’s been something I’ve been considering!!
a bronzing brush? I think I have one but I haven’t been using it much. I been considering it also but I wear a lot less makeup in the summer so i’m still undeceive about it 🙂
The biggest summer must for me is that all products have SPF, not always the best at using a separate sunscreen, but if I use primer, moisturizer, powder and all have SPF I figure I’m covered!
Oh yes me too! I keep my “in rotation” products on a tray on top of my organizer drawers and all of them have SPF. Easiest thing to do!!
The Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Bronzer powder.
Supergoop sunscreen for your face, it is super sheer and doesn’t clog pores and baby lips SPF.
Who doesn’t love supergoop?? I have yet to try the oil sunscreen, I need to put it in rotation asap!!!
I am loving the NARS in travel size. Gotta try that for sure!
I have a new love for Coola products! The after sun lotion is awesome!
i love anything coola i think except for the smelly ones!
Self tanner is my newest must have product. This is a great set, I don’t own a single thing from it already.
my fave are the self-tanner towelettes. that’s probably what i would answer!
I am new to all of this so I don’t have a must-have summer beauty product YET. But I am intrigued about the DL nail polish and would LOVE to try that. All of these products sound really fun.
i got one in a blush mystery box (not as good as they used to be, but improving again), and it’s amazing. the color/pigment and the glitter variety = so much fun!!!
I was laughing when you told that your son picking something at Sephora! My son did the same too, honestly i didn’t know until a few days later. Yes, that’s mommy life, pretty much i need to be alone to shop at Sephora. I heard so many great things about The UD spray, so i will love to try that baby out for the summer, when your makeup like melting the minute you step from your door
i wouldn’t have known until i got home except i happened to lift up my diaper bag to put a box of fruit underneath it instead of the stroller basket. yes you SO need to try the UD spray!!!
Super Goop and Coola products!
Definitely tanning lotion- it was a long winter without the sun 🙂
The UD spray is a must try after all the great things you’ve said about it!!
yes! it’s relatively inexpensive too!!! it just sets everything, i touch my face a LOT and it really helps keep everything put!
Right!? I love Urban Decay, it’s probably my favorite Cosmetic line…
Hmm the one item I use in the summer that I don’t use much the rest of the year is my Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Renewal Beach Spray. I love the feel of it in the summer and I had gotten a sample I blew through and then somewhere bought some more. So I am ready to go this summer 🙂
is it a good smelling one? half of the sprays (and i have a ton of them!) smell terrible. i dont know why. i think the alterna is the worst. ugh!
Brandy, give the Bed Head Sugar Spray a try. I really like it, and it’s not really heavy like some others I’ve tried. A lot of salons will work with you now till you find a product you like. At my salon, we would let ppl come exchange product until they found something they were happy with. Just make sure you know the return policy.
ahhhhhh i just looked that up, you are right, i must try it!!!!! it sounds perfect for my hair!!! i don’t use a salon here. too difficult with the kids. my husband’s cousin owns a salon in VT and my cousin manages an aveda in FL. so i just get my hair cut when i visit family. through trial & error i have found that i’d just rather grow out my hair in between than deal with finding a stylist here. (since i have to pay for a sitter and all that). i also have my stylist in boston, who i have used for i don’t know, 15 years. he’ll be embarrassed at how old we are!
Lol! I totally understand, now that I’ve been out of the salon for almost 2 yrs I go A LOT longer between cuts. It’s just hard to find the time! AND I’m glad to hear I could help! 🙂
Sexy Hair products are awesome. Probably my favorite Root Lifter and their Hairspray is one of the few I use often, along with Kenra and Sebastian. I was a stylist for 10 yrs and managed a salon, so you can imagine that I’m kind of selective when it comes to hair items. Lol
It doesn’t have much of a smell at all. I agree that some really really stink. I’ve thrown many away due to smell.
My must try item of the summer is Maui Babe tanning lotion. thanks for doing this giveaway!
i have never heard of that, i looked it up, i am guessing its sort of like the tea trick for sunburns?? how unusual!!!
