This is my first shipment! It was delivered to my door via UPS. Keep in mind that someone 21 or older will need to be home to sign for the wine, or opt to pick it up at a UPS locker or somewhere like CVS.
My wines were protected by cardboard packaging.
I received three bottles and opted for reds and whites.
The three bottle option is called Club C’EST LA VIE and is $99 a shipment. The 6 bottle option is called Club RENDEZ-VOUS and is $192 a shipment.
Want to order SomMailier as a gift? Your recipient will receive a card with their order. The inside will include a hand-written message.
The back of the card will show which gift option they will receive. Send a one-time box or give the gift that keeps on giving.
Next, I found a brochure about the company and founder.
The inside featured one of the makers and lets me know that I can now order champagne and rosé.
A family member of the founder was on the back, along with the social media handles.
I received a bonus gift.
It’s a no-spill pourer!
It’s a piece of material that can be formed into a spout so every drop makes it into the glass.
Each wine comes with an information card. I think it has just enough info to help me feel like I know the wine and it helps me figure out what to serve it with. It tells me which grapes went into the wine, in this case: Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre. It suggested serving with Beef Bourguignon, one of my favorites, so I will do just that, and will use it to make that recipe too!
Info on the terroir where the grapes are grown was given. It shows that this wine was produced in a Mediterranean climate and that this area is known for its “round & full-bodied” wines. I like that there were SomMailier’s notes on aroma and flavor, as well as room for me to write my own thoughts.
Rhonea Roque Columbe Chateauneuf-Du-Pape 2016 Artisans Vignerons ($58) has a spicy nose and is well-balanced. Wines from this Rhone region are bold with plummy fruit flavor. 2016 was considered an exceptional year for this type of wine.
I like the unique sticker on the back of the wines. It has helpful info such as which temperature to serve the wine, which grapes went into the blend, food pairing suggestion, and storage length.
While my husband loves red wine, my favorite is white. Chardonnay is one of the most popular white wines out there and can be paired with mild fish, chicken, or creamy vegetarian dishes.
The grapes in this bottle are from Burgundy, and this area is known for its “round & fresh” wines.
2017 Pernand-Vergelesses Les Combottes Domaine Rapet ($42.99) The aroma is fruity and this felt wonderful in my mouth. It’s not sweet, falls in the medium range for dryness, and has a ripe, fruity flavor and is very balanced. I usually like a sweet wine, but this one isn’t too acidic for my tastes and is quite enjoyable.
I placed this bottle in my fridge before serving so it would be well chilled. You can save this for another 7 years if you are adding it to your collection.
Our final wine was a Bordeaux made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes. It would be perfect served alongside meat, lamb, or game or try it with a meal made with mushrooms.
The notes on this wine says it smells like blackcurrant and sweet chocolate. My husband said it smells like chocolate and raspberry.
Grand Vin Chateau De Portets 2015 Graves ($34) I thought it smelled sharp and fruity. Tannins are still pretty high, but then that’s what helps a wine age for years without tasting flat. It is full-bodied and dry.
Serve between 62-65°F and store for another 5 years if you like.
I was very impressed with the wines I received in my SomMailier French Wine Club! They were very lush and much better than the kind I get at my grocery store. I felt like the value was really good too, more than the price paid for the subscription! I liked the cards that came with each wine, I thought they were helpful without being overwhelming, and I knew what to serve my wine with and how I could expect it to taste. I think this would make a superb treat for you, or an impressive gift for a friend or associate.
