Akibento is a new monthly Anime subscription box! They promise an epic shirt monthly and $60 in value over 6-8 items, all perfect for anime fans!
I was pretty excited when I opened this up! I consulted with Sara (don’t worry, she’ll be back for more expert Loot Anime reviews), but my kids decimated this box, and Sara decided that my daughter would look cuter with the wearable item, so I’ll be reviewing this one! It’s not a surprise to me at all that my kids were drawn to the box, as it appears to be related in some way to 1 Up Box (a super kid-friendly geek subscription box).
The theme for February is FRIENDSHIP. This is the second box – I missed out on the first – it sold out (so did this one)!
The information card lists the items in the box and their pictures.
Everything in our box!
Friendship T-Shirt ($10?) This shirt combines characters from Kuroko’s Basketball, Madoka Magica, Kill la Kill, and Natsu from Fairy Tail.
Doraemon Funko Pop! Anime Vinyl Figure ($8.49) Doraemon is a manga series about this cat-shaped robot from the future! The anime is basically a kids’ show and I think a great way to get my kids into the world of manga and anime!
The back of the box explained the gadget cat from the future’s backstory.
He’s super cute with a little bell.
And his tail is a little lever!
Rilakkuma is feeling relaxed.
Akibento February 2016 Button – FRIENDSHIP
Inside the Rilakkuma Stationery Blind Bag (which was not on the card) was a little paper bookmark, a small sticker sheet, and a square of gum (a light green apple flavor I believe!). 75¢?
All subscribers received 1 of 4 pin sets from Kill la Kill ($9.92)! They were all adorable! My daughter got her paws on them immediately.
From Sara’s January Loot Anime review:
Kill la Kill. Written by Kazuki Nakashima, the story of one girl’s quest to find her father’s killer is a unique one. Ryuko Matoi transfers schools in a bid to hunt down clues relating to her father’s murder. The sword that she wields is actually half of a pair of scissors originally made by her father; the other half of the weapon being stolen by the one who killed him. The scissors are unique in that they are able to destroy one of the basic articles of clothing in the storyline, Goku Uniforms. The uniforms are made out of a substance called Life Fibers and the garment bestows its wearer with superhuman abilities.
Kill La Kill Rivets Beanie ($19.58) Subscribers received one of four beanies, either from Kill la Kill or Fairy Tail. I thought the design was awesome! Sara is right, my daughter’s a hat girl, and totally wanted this (but won’t be wearing it to school!).
Kuroko’s Basketball Magnet Collection ($7.19) Subscribers could receive this set, Love Live, or Madoka Magica. Sara aptly described this: yeah, i’ve heard of that one, but it’s a boy’s manga so i’ve never cared much about it. i mean….all they do is play basketball. Note that these magnets are not for ages 15 years and under (!).
This was a fun box from Akibento! I have to say that everything was a hit with my kids except for the magnets. As mentioned earlier, it looks like this box is well-suited for a more general audience since my kids just absolutely glommed on to it. I thought the curation was pretty great for this type of box, and calculated approximately $56 in value, assuming everything is authentic (I don’t have any reason to suspect it’s not).
