Birchbox Man is a monthly grooming and lifestyle subscription for men. Through it, you’ll receive 3-4 sample items that are smaller versions of what you can order from the Birchbox site, plus a lifestyle item that is full-size. Boxes are $20 per month and you can earn points for reviewing the contents of each box you receive – and, since you can earn 110 points ($11 in the shop) for picking up a yearly subscription, this is a great deal.
The information card no longer gives the details on each item. See your box at birchbox.com/mybox. The theme for February was “Life Hacked” and included products to help tune up your routine.
Subscribers are given a sample choice opportunity via email/you account to choose a lifestyle item. The lifestyle item I selected this month was one pair of Hammak Basic Boxer Briefs ($22), which were very soft and roomy. At first, I thought that a tiny external pocket on boxer briefs was silly – but I like it now, even though it’s not good for holding anything much larger than a couple of condoms.
The Marvis Mouthwash Concentrate (Strong Mint flavor) ($5.62) had a good, strong minty flavor. I think it was undercut with a hint of anise (like anisette toast), and a small amount produced more foam than I had expected; my mouth felt quite fresh afterwards.
The (MALIN+GOETZ) clarifying clay mask ($6.06) worked perfectly. Over the course of 15 minutes, I let the mask set into my skin and then gently scrubbed it off with a warm, wet face towel. When I was done, my skin looked and felt smoother as well as softer.
I had a slightly more complicated response to the Jack Black Turbo Wash Energizing Cleanser for Hair & Body ($1.67). I liked the cleanser, but I felt that I enjoyed using it more on my skin. I am notoriously picky about my hair, and the products I use in it, so it’s possible that I just have too many fragrances that I prefer in my hair than on my skin.
The Blackbird Transparent Shave ($3.50) produced a very close shave, although it wasn’t quite as close a shave as what I get with my normal facial care products. No matter what, I liked the smell, and could see that it was a high quality shave cream. If I hadn’t already found a shave cream that I like so much, I would definitely consider switching over to this one.
Overall, I was fairly pleased with the contents of this subscription box. Just as importantly, the contents of the February box were worth $38.85 (adjusted for the list price of the products in their standard sizes), which is a great return on the $20 it would cost to receive the package. If I were looking for a good variety and value on men’s care products, Birchbox would be the first website I would check.
