The May 2015 Gentleman’s Box tips its hat to “our favorite getaway driver” — likely Jason Statham from the Transporter series — or Ryan Gosling from Drive. The inclusion of a beard grooming item makes the latter slightly more likely, as his stubble is a wee bit more advanced. Gentleman’s Box is a monthly men’s subscription box – including the required essentials for the savvy man. Every box includes the latest issue of GQ and selected items ranging from style to grooming.
Given May’s theme, this month’s box is packed full of items you might associate with your favorite sophisticatedly appointed wheelman.
Simple informational card.
This month’s items. Contents range from “this is neat,” to “score!”
Gentlemen’s box includes a copy of GQ ($6) for informational purposes, as well as grooming products and fashion accessories. This month apparently features the properly-proportioned and actually pretty member of the infamous reality TV family. For the uninitiated, GQ is like a women’s magazine (products galore) mixed with left-of-center editorial and a splash of Maxim-like photo spreads. Plus the homoeroticism of Men’s Fitness. If for nothing else, it’s fun to see what icon of male virility will be featured in the fashion-house adds (last month was bull-fighters — gladiators in flowery quilts and sequined short-pants). This month looks to the Southwest — now we need to find a policeman and construction worker…
Detroit Beard Collective Beard Balm ($15): The great beard revival that has hit popular culture in the last few years has made sporting a beard OK again — but it has to be well-maintained even if it is never trimmed. Currently beardless, I had to do the eyebrow test. This balm adds some shine but is not for styling. It smells like your dad’s barber.
Gentlemen’s Box Magnetic Collar Stays ($20): This is the “score” portion of the box. wimpy collar points are a perpetual problem for anyone who washes their own shirts (face it, no one uses starch at home). I received a similar pair of these last year and fell in love with them. Unfortunately, the coating chipped off of the magnets over time, so here is hoping these are more durable. Also comes with a leather case, which is awesome, since these guys are easy to lose.
Proof Wooden Wallet ($18): I invented this a couple decades ago when I put a rubber band from some broccoli around my credit card, license and cash roll before heading to the bar. This version adds a high-durability band and attractive, contoured wood covers to the concept. Plus it floats!
Daneson #7 Cinnamint Toothpicks ($5): You see this kind of thing at your fancier BBQ joints.
Torr Attire First Class Socks ($30): These compression socks would be great for long drives or flights where swelling may be and issue. These are ultra long and thin enough for summer wear.
Another fun month for this box. The value of the May Gentleman’s Box was around $63. There was some fun stuff, and the collar stays made the box for me.
