The theme for the February 2018 OwlCrate Jr. box is WILD MAGIC!

The information card cleverly conveys a bit about everything in the box.

Everything in the February OwlCrate JR. box!

The first item in this month’s box is a small button pin – a campfire! Reminiscent of a merit badge, it’s too cute.

Magnet. We also got another addition to our ref magnet collections! And it is a map of The Wood by Carson Ellis.

The design of this magnet is from the fantasy adventure series by Colin Meloy, The Wildwood Chronicles. Here’s a description of the first book:

For fans of The Chronicles of Narnia comes the first book in the Wildwood Chronicles, the New York Times bestselling fantasy adventure series by Colin Meloy, lead singer of the Decemberists, and Carson Ellis, acclaimed illustrator of The Mysterious Benedict Society. Now in paperback!

In Wildwood, Prue and her friend Curtis uncover a secret world in the midst of violent upheaval—a world full of warring creatures, peaceable mystics, and powerful figures with the darkest intentions. And what begins as a rescue mission becomes something much greater as the two friends find themselves entwined in a struggle for the very freedom of this wilderness. A wilderness the locals call Wildwood.

Wildwood captivates readers with the wonder and thrill of a secret world within the landscape of a modern city. It feels at once firmly steeped in the classics of children’s literature and completely fresh at the same time. The story is told from multiple points of view, and the book features more than eighty illustrations, including six full-color plates, making this an absolutely gorgeous object.

This will be a definite addition to my daughter’s TBR pile!

The book is always packaged with the letter, bookplate, and sometimes a bonus item inside a plastic envelope to protect it from squiggles.

The Pine Mountain Company Field Notes Notebook. A handy dandy notebook!

I believe it’s made of recycled paper, and the pages are gridded too.

At the back of the notebook, you can find the Ranger’s Vow!

Loyal, brave, kind and true— Keeper of the Old and New—

I guard the wild, Defend the weak, Mark the path, And virtue seek.

Forest spirits hear me now  As I speak my Ranger’s Vow

And there’s also a note from John August!

John August is an American screenwriter, director, producer and novelist. Perhaps he could have included a note use our Kindle when reading while eating though? Just sayin.

Arlo Finch In The Valley Of Fire By John August ($13.79)

Arlo Finch in the Valley of Fire is the first book in a spellbinding fantasy adventure series by screenwriter John August.

Some trails lead to magic. Some lead to danger.

As Arlo looked around, the walls of his room began to vanish, revealing a moonlit forest. Only his bed remained, and the frame of his window, through which he saw the girl. The world on her side of the glass was sparkling with silver and gold, like a palace made of autumn leaves.
She looked off to her right. Someone was coming. Her words came in an urgent whisper: “If I can see you, they can see you . . . Be careful, Arlo Finch.

Arlo Finch thought becoming a Ranger meant learning wilderness skills, like camping and knots. But upon arriving in the tiny town of Pine Mountain, Colorado, Arlo soon learns there’s so much more. His new friends Indra and Wu teach him how to harness the wild magic seeping in from the mysterious Long Woods―a parallel realm of wonder and danger.

First he must master the basics, including snaplights, thunderclaps and identifying supernatural creatures. But Arlo Finch is no ordinary Ranger, and this is no ordinary time. A dark and ancient force is sending threats into the real world . . . our world.

Through perilous adventures and close calls, Arlo is awakened to his unique destiny―but the obstacles he faces will test the foundations of the Ranger’s Vow: loyalty, bravery, kindness, and truth.

There is a short synopsis of the story on the inside flap of the cover. My daughter put a note on top of this box “Doooo this one firrrrrrrst pleeeeeease” so I did, and she is about halfway through the book, running to tell me all about it – she says she thinks she has figured it all out. We’ll see!

The book includes an autographed sticker book plate, which we placed inside!

This is the perfect book for adventure-loving young readers, and those who love magic too!

The pages are full text, with no illustrations to accompany them.

Meet Big Feet (The Yetty Files) By Kevin Sherry ($6.40)

A hilarious new chapter book series from the bestselling author/illustrator of I’M THE BIGGEST THING IN THE OCEAN.

Blizz Richards is a great guy, a caring boss, and a loyal friend. Oh, yeah…he’s also a yeti! He’s made it his life’s mission to study cryptids like him, hidden animals who have taken a powerful oath to never be seen by the outside world.

So when a photo of Cousin Brian becomes a media sensation, Brian can’t handle the guilt and disappears. But it’s time for the annual Bigfoot family reunion, and it won’t be the same without him. Luckily, Blizz and his devoted team are on the case. Can they find their furry friend before their secret gets out for good?

In Kevin Sherry’s hilarious new illustrated series, you’ll meet a wide array of weird and wacky cryptids, from goblins and Goatman to skunk apes and Sasquatch–animals that you don’t believe exist. And it’s up to Blizz to keep it that way!

The back of the book gives a sneak peek to what’s inside!

When you open it, there’s a list and illustration of the story’s different characters.

Unlike the first book we got from this box, this one had fun illustrations!

There’s even a drawing of the different internal parts of a yeti. Even serious text-heavy readers absolutely love books like this but we also found that my daughter could let her younger siblings borrow it so she could read in peace!

Owl Crate Jr.’s Guide To Knots. A camper’s must-know cheat sheet!

They also included a rope tie to practice with!

And we tried knotting the rope. And not only one knot in a rope, we did two!

Wild Magic Bandana. We also got a cute and big bandana!

It features various designs, and Owl Crate Jr.’s logo!

And for the next month…

It’s for Rump, Jinx, and Ella Enchanted fans!

I cannot make this up, my daughter has been practicing tourniquets since we opened the box a few days ago. I love how the items extended the fun of the book into the real world.  The theme was fantastic and the goodies were great, especially the knot guide! They are trying different knots with it and they are asking me if we can have a camping trip, as this box truly inspired them. I guess we’re ready for the outdoors! My daughter loved the books, they’re new additions to her growing library (I bought three new bookshelves in just the last month). The theme for next month got us excited all over again, and we’re looking forward to it!
