George R.R. Martin Box: Random House, HBO, and George R.R Martin have partnered to create a box commemorating the 20th anniversary of the publication of A Game of Thrones, the first book in the series, A Song of Fire and Ice. The box is available in three tiers: a Special Edition, a Limited Edition (3000 boxes made), and an Ultra Limited Edition (only 200 boxes made). The boxes will ship in December, arriving in time for Christmas.
Special Edition ($75)
- Exclusive book: Collectible 20th anniversary illustrated edition of A Game of Thrones bound in eco-trim fiber, featuring gilded edged paper, color illustrations, color endpaper maps, and ribbon marker
- Exclusive HBO Game of Thrones t-shirt, featuring map of Westeros and sigils
- Exclusive reproduction of Robert Baratheon’s Will from the HBO series
- Living Language Dothraki online course
- Iron Coin of the Faceless Man from Shire Post Mint
The special edition is a lower tier than the one we’re reviewing here, but it’s still available. The items in the above box are included in the review below.
We received two shipments. This mailer is a teaser for the full boxes.
Winter is Coming Ornament: What house could be more appropriate for a Winter holiday than House Stark!?! The ornament is silver with an off-white face bearing the Stark motto. The top has a decorative cap and braided cord for hanging.
The reverse is even cooler, with a giant direwolf from the Stark sigil. This will look on the tree! Unfortunately, the Ultra Limited box is sold out (seriously!) but you can still grab the other tiers.
Limited Edition – Only 3000 available ($200)
This is the full Limited Edition box. The lid has the George R. R. Martin insignia. The front and back have dire wolves surrounding crossed swords.
The sides have a pair of leaping Baratheon stags.
First view inside the Limited Edition Box!
Exclusive keepsake printed box with GRRM insignia, individually numbered. We ordered our box as early as we could, and we still received #2985 of 3000!
Everything in the box!
Exclusive silk map of King’s Landing (2 feet x 3 feet): This huge map has great detail, including labels for all the major locales inside King’s Landing – the Red Keep, Great Sept, all major roads and districts (e.g. Fleabottom), and the named gates to the city. The silk is great – you can handle it without it suffering any wear.
Exclusive HBO Game of Thrones t-shirt, featuring map of Westeros and sigils: This comfy 100% cotton tee features a silhouette map of Westeros and the sigils of the eight major houses.
I love the nod to the Greyjoys and Targaryens off the coasts.
Holiday sigil shield lights from Kurt Adler: A string of ten lights for your holiday decorations.
The shields have two each of the sigils for houses Stark, Targaryen, Baratheon, Lannister, and Tyrell.
A single light at the top illuminates each sigil. The decals on the front aren’t very translucent, but the rim around each glows.
Exclusive Lord Commander Jon Snow and Queen Daenerys miniatures from Dark Sword Miniatures: These pewter miniatures are based on the literary version of the characters.
The detail is superb – you can see the individual links on Jon’s chain mail.
The characters are fully-rendered front and back.
Each figure is about 1 1/4″ high.
SPOILER WARNING: the Dead Man’s Set contains images of characters that are, well, dead… so here’s hoping you are caught up on your reading/viewing!
Iron Coin of the Faceless Man from Shire Post Mint: The center coin is the Coin of the Faceless Man, made of .999 pure iron.
Dead Man Set of coins from Westeros (previously unreleased) from Shire Post Mint: The remaining six coins feature notable men of Westeros who’ve recently met untimely ends.
Other than the iron coin, the others are either brass or copper.
The small pamphlet includes a note on each man’s significance within Westeros and the manner of his death. Most include a colorful passage from the books describing the scene of each’s demise.
Each coin has a “heads” and “tails” side with unique design.
Shirepost threw in a coupon code, too, if you need more.
Exclusive Maester’s journal from Insight Editions: A leatheresque journal with embossed and black and gold design on front and back. Each side has a large ring of Maester’s chains.
The back has a raven and maester’s book.
The inside of the back cover has a scene from within the great library at the Citadel in Oldtown. There is also a slim pocket built into the back cover.
The inside of the front cover shows the approach to Oldtown, including the High Tower at its center.
The interior is ruled “archival” paper.
Living Language Dothraki online course: The reverse side of this card has a code to access an online conversational course in Dothraki. Excellent for those moments when Klingon just won’t cut it.
Exclusive reproduction of Robert Baratheon’s Will from the HBO series: The exterior bears the seal of the House Baratheon.
The text of the will reflects Robert’s wishes, or at least his wishes as Eddard Stark chose to memorialize them.
Exclusive book: Collectible 20th anniversary illustrated edition of A Game of Thrones bound in eco-trim fiber, featuring gilded edged paper, color illustrations, color endpaper maps, and ribbon marker.
The front cover has a long sword in gold.
The back cover has the George R. R. Martin logo.
Gold edging surrounds each page.
The inside of the front and back covers have color maps of North and South portions of Westeros.
The book is heavily illustrated, with black and white illustrations appearing frequently.
There are also several sections with a multitude of beautiful, full-color illustrations.
They cover a great variety of characters and memorable scenes.
The multitude of illustrated pages made a glorious crackling sound when the pages where turned for the first time!
The book includes and appendix with succession charts for all the major houses.
I found this comical sticker of George R. R. Martin tucked into the back of the book.
A Game of Thrones: The Card Game with exclusive Daenerys as Khaleesi card from Fantasy Flight: This game is played without a board, using character and scenario cards to guide the action.
The cards track all of the major characters and events from the series.
The set includes a massive deck of cards (it had to be packaged in two separate stacks), plus game guides and tokens. At top left is the bonus Daenerys card.
The game is so complex, it includes both a rules guide and a rather thick rules reference.
The game included a catalog with other Fantasy Flight games (though it is a bit dated).
This box is incredible! It has so many cool items to geek out over. The book is absolutely gorgeous, and a wonderful centerpiece for the box. I love the map, the game, shirt, coins — we even have something cool to hang in our tree! I think the Limited Edition was worth the premium over the Special Edition. Lots of great stuff for the GOT/ ASOIAF fan!
