Nick and Nack Make Music: An Interactive Story

Now, we’re on to the contents of the activity box, starting with the Level 1 Puzzle Reader entitled Nick and Nack Make Music ($16.99). It’s designed for little ones who are just starting to dip their toes into the world of reading. The story not only encourages sounding out letters and familiar syllables but also follows the charming duo, Nick and his robot pal Nack, on their musical adventures. What makes it extra special are the Hidden Pictures scenes woven into the tale, creating an interactive reading experience that keeps the little ones hooked. The story is full of repeated words, making it a fantastic tool for kids who are just discovering the joys of reading.

It’s a screen-free independent adventure that encourages play and exploration. Plus, the activities subtly teach cooperation, focus, and patience—essential skills bundled in a fun package. My daughter was absolutely thrilled with it. She delved into the story with great enthusiasm, reading it from start to finish, and she didn’t miss a single hidden puzzle along the way. It was a joy to see her so engaged and enjoying every part of it.

Infusing Play Into Lessons

Roll with the Music is hands down my kid’s favorite activity from the Highlights High Five Activity Box. We got a red die with song names and a green die with actions – talk about a dynamic duo. The concept is genius: just roll the dice, and voila! The song on the red die guides our musical journey, while the green die tells us what action to bust out. It’s like having our own mini dance party right at home!

This activity adds a groovy twist to the whole music theme of the box. It’s simple, it’s fun, and it’s got my kiddo moving, laughing, and loving every beat. Plus, it’s a genius way to blend music and movement, making learning a rhythmically delightful experience.

Crafting and Creating Bring Hands-On Fun

Next up were the Musical Recipes, and they were a hit! My kid got to channel their inner chef with Mozart’s Merry Christmas Spritzer and Timpani Drumsticks. Although the ingredients weren’t included, the easy-to-follow instructions made it a breeze to whip up a musical concoction.

But that’s not all—the creativity didn’t stop at cooking. The box took it up a notch with an activity that involves assembling musical instruments! With paint pots and a brush, my little artist had a blast decorating a wooden rod, tambourine, and drumsticks. Fuzzy strings and bells added the finishing touches to the wooden rod, turning it into a magical musical stick that produce a jingle bells symphony. Meanwhile, the tambourine and the drumsticks got their own cool makeovers, creating a rhythmic duo that added even more beats to our at-home concert.

And the fun kept rolling with a color-along adventure. After completing each activity, my kid got to color a scene that illustrated what we just did. It’s like reliving the joy of each moment while adding our artistic flair to the mix. Together, these activities contribute to enhancing creativity, culinary skills, fine motor abilities, and nurturing a passion for the arts. The Highlights High Five Activity Box truly knows how to strike all the right chords for a harmonious learning experience!

My daughter loved the Puzzle Reader, read the whole story, and did all the hidden puzzles. She was the perfect age for the Early Reader box! She enjoyed working on the crafts knowing she was decorating and building musical instruments. The book had a cool craft to make a guitar, and when she got to that part, she exclaimed how much she wanted to make that too. She loved the singing and the roll the dice activity and did lots of combinations. I thought having High Five magazine included was amazing, she worked on reading it cover to cover and I think she’ll be keeping it on the table until she receives the next one!

Overall, the Highlights High Five Activity Box brings together fun and learning in a way that keeps my kid engaged and excited. It brings together award-winning content, featuring Puzzle Readers that are not only great for independent play but also ideal for bonding with a loved one. It’s not just about reading or playing—it’s a mix of both! The hands-on activities are cleverly designed to encourage curious kids and boost different skills while keeping things light and enjoyable. Moreover, these skill-building adventures are not just a one-time thing. The materials can be reused, inspiring a lifelong love of reading. Whether it’s crafting, reading, or dancing around to a pretend concert, this box has turned our living room into a magical play zone where learning is always a joy.
