The October 2023 Vegancuts Snack Box was themed “No Tricks, Just Treats!”. I received 11 items and I found most to be treats of the sweet variety. Read on to see what I received!

DEAL: Use the coupon code hellosub to get $5 off your first box on any Vegancuts subscription!   It can only be used once per customer, but it can be used on multiple subscriptions at once so long as they are in the same transaction.

Proceeds from this box helps support animal sanctuaries. The back of this card lists the snacks inside the box.

Pop Mix by Marilyn Cinnamon Popcorn ($2.33) Just in case you were wondering if all vegan food is healthy, this sugary treat reminds us that it’s not. Inside I found caramel-covered popcorn with an interesting twist — it has cinnamon in the caramel! There are 2.5 servings in this bag so just know that if you eat the whole thing in one sitting, you’ve also had a half day’s allowance of sugar with virtually no nutritional benefits.

Love, Corn in Smoked BBQ ($1.15) I really like salted corn nuts but this smoky BBQ version was tasty too. The flavoring was subtle, not as strong as BBQ chips, and I liked that they weren’t sweet like some BBQ flavored snacks.

FamBam Foods Vegan Caulipuffs in Salt & Pepper ($2) These are corn and rice puffs with cauliflower, salt, and pepper. I like the seasoning, and I’m not against cauliflower as a vegetable on my plate, but I didn’t care for the aftertaste that was present (which is pretty common with cruciferous vegetables). Think Pirate Booty but without the cheese — keep some gum on hand.

Kibo Chickpea Chips in Mediterranean Herbs ($1.83) I find that most snacks that have a “Mediterranean” flavor have a similar basil/tomato taste about them. These chickpea chips also have lentil and pea flours and there are 2 grams of fiber in this serving. The texture was good and it was a good snack to take to a nut-free classroom.

NotCo Not Milk Whole My vegan milk of choice is an unsweetened almond milk but it is nice to try something new. This has a rich mouth-feel and the flavor was a bit nutty. It has ingredients I wasn’t expecting in a milk, like pineapple juice, cabbage juice, pea protein, and sunflower oil but otherwise it reminded me of those creamer containers that I used to drink when I was a kid that my parents would get when they ordered coffee.

Snack Owl Watermelon Slices These taste like watermelon sour gummies that are sweetened with a combo of allulose, sucralose (Splenda), and sugar and even though they have fruit and veggie extracts for color, they also have artificial dyes (which are derived from petroleum). They are sticky and chewy and have a slight aftertaste. Allulose may lead to GI discomfort in those who are sensitive.

Wiley Wallaby Soft & Chewy Classic Red Licorice ($2.40) I’ve never been a fan of licorice so this will be passed to a friend who loves Red Vines. It’s supposed to have less sugar but of course the first two ingredients are sugar and that color comes from dye.

Lenny & Larry’s The Complete Cookie in Snickerdoodle ($1.91) Please note that this huge cookie is two servings, so the 10 grams of fiber shown on the front of the pack also comes with 460 calories and not much nutrition. It’s denser than the usual snickerdoodle and doesn’t taste like one either, more like a soft-baked cinnamon-flavored peanut butter cookie, without the peanuts.

Misfits Plant-Powdered Choc Protein Bar ($2.50) This is supposed to be a healthier take on a candy bar rather than a meal replacement. It’s supposed to have vegan caramel layer that in their online pictures is described as “gooey” but that wasn’t apparent, and there’s a noticeable aftertaste that I encounter with most stevia-sweetened products. If you are vegan and have to avoid sugar then I think you might like these.

Clif Builders Protein Minis ($2.59) This is a mini protein bar that aims to provide 10 grams of protein after a quick workout. The first ingredient is soy protein isolate and the next three ingredients are various sugars. It has that dense protein bar texture, which is chewy, and it’s very sweet. I ate about half of the mint one and haven’t tried the peanut butter version yet.

Vegancuts sent new items and a few repeats but for the most part, I enjoyed it all. I would prefer that the foods I eat not have artificial dye or sugar alternatives and I found a few products like that in this box, but overall I could eat most of it. My favorites were the BBQ Love Corn and the coated popcorn, plus I was excited to try the milk alternative. I wasn’t a fan of the candies though, mainly because they are made with red dye. I appreciate that everything is individually packaged, since I mainly take these snacks to work and it’s easy to grab and go, and the smaller sizes means I get enough of a taste to see if it’s something I might want to buy at the store (like the alternative milk, I would buy that). Personally, I would like to see less sweets in this subscription, or at least a better variety of snacks. I would also like to see Vegancuts avoid artificial dyes, no one needs dye in their food.

Vegancuts Snack Box is a monthly vegan food subscription that delivers 10 or more organic and vegan treats each month. Snacks can include a pantry item or drink and most snacks are gluten-free. Each subscription box costs $24.95 monthly, or save a bit with a longer pre-paid term.
