Almost Tea Box April 2023 featured teas inspired by Cupcake A La Mode, and the bags had some beautiful cupcakes on them. Three of the teas had a rooibos base, one was black, one oolong, and one pu’erh. This is a review of The Slurp, which comes with 30 individually wrapped bags of tea (6 different flavors, 5 bags each flavor). There is a smaller version called The Sip which has 12 tea bags (2 of each flavor).

Look at how pretty those packs are, the cupcakes look stunning!

Key Lime Pie Green Rooibos This herbal tea has a green rooibos base and is supposed to taste like key lime pie! Of course, there are natural and artificial flavors used so they can make it taste like anything they want. This had a hint of caramel or maybe white chocolate along with the lime and robust rooibos flavor.

Raspberry Lemonade Green Rooibos Summer is almost here and raspberry lemonade sounds like a refreshing treat, but until then I have a warm cup of herbal tea to remind me of what’s to come. It has a base of green rooibos plus some citrus and berry notes, and just a hint of tartness. I didn’t need to add sugar but I bet this would be good sweetened and poured over ice.

Amaretto Sweet Oolong Tea has a base of oolong tea and has a strong cherry almond scent that lingered. It has some caffeine and no sugar was needed. It has licorice but it wasn’t super strong, I could tolerate it with no problem.

Coconut Caramel Chocolate Honeybush I’m not usually a fan of coconut or chocolate in tea but it worked well here, probably because there was caramel too! It also tasted like the boldest of this month’s teas, almost like it had a black tea base, yet it’s made with honeybush and is caffeine-free. Although I don’t think this brand’s teas need sugar (which is crazy, because I almost always add sugar to tea), I went ahead and enhanced it with a spoonful so it would be even more dessert-like, and I bet some milk would make it downright decadent.

German Chocolate Cake Pu’erh Tea I knew three things before drinking this tea that I wouldn’t care for: #1, Pu-erh is a musty, earthy, funky sort of fermented black tea and takes some getting used to; #2, I don’t like chocolate flavors in tea; and #3, I don’t like coconut in my tea (the previous tea is the exception to the rule). All together it’s almost too much for my taste buds and you may have different feelings but I thought I should let you know it goes against several of my tea preferences, sorry. Let me know what you think of this flavor if you’ve tried it.

After Breakfast Mint Black Tea This one is called After Breakfast tea because it has caffeine, which may cause a restless night if sipped before bed (but you could probably drink it in the afternoon, you know your body’s boundaries best). It’s not super strong, it reminded me of an herbal tea. There was of course a hint of mint and some chocolate from the cacao shells, and I couldn’t tell it had licorice.

I sure like cupcakes but those calories add up quickly. Almost Tea puts the flavors of those tasty treats into a calorie-free tea, so you can indulge without the guilt (or sugar rush). I appreciate the fact that this subscription comes with both caffeinated and caffeine-free teas – I tend to drink the herbal teas in the evening and any with caffeine before 3pm. The teas that have caffeine in them are not super strong, they kind of taste like herbal teas too, but then again I don’t feel the need to add sugar and milk like I would with a cup of English Breakfast tea.

Here’s the insert I received, which lists the flavors and has a place for you to write down your personal rating. There’s also an interview with the founder of Cupcake A La Mode.

Almost Tea is striving to ERADICATE THE EARTH OF BORING CHAMOMILE TEA with fresh, never-been-seen tea blends inspired by great desserts. They leverage a “monthly drop” model, where new teas are inspired by a different dessert maker every month. Almost Teas do not contain any added sugar or artificial sweeteners.
