They also listed all the box contents and provided us information on how it works.

This is a review of the MEL Science Kids – Cave Sound box.

We’re so excited to finally open this box!

There’s a blueprint of the project at the inside of the box’s top lid.

The materials were also packed in two smaller boxes. One has red icons, while the other has blue icons.

Everything in my box!

It comes with a hexagonal card that we can scan using the app for the AR experience!

Here’s how it looks like on the app!

The 3D image on the screen also comes with an explanation regarding how the music box works.

This app makes learning extra fun!

We have this map sticker for this month’s box. It’s a picture of a mother and baby dragon!

Here’s the map we received from the intro box. This is where all the monthly stickers are placed.

My kid easily found out the slot for this month’s sticker!

There you go! The sticker belongs to the area with caves, as suggested by this month’s theme.

The booklet contains educational comics and activities.

The booklet provided the list of components for easy reference.

The box provided rubber bands, grommet, o-ring, rivet, small gear, paws, axle, handle, base, hammers, hanger frame, horns, large gear, metal plates, dragon, tailless dragon, track, and keys!

The comics don’t only tell a story but also explains and gives instructions about the project.

My kids had a great time reading the story. Reading this before proceeding to the activity was a great warm up!

The instructions are mostly illustrations. Everything is kid-friendly!

Also, it’s best to identify the parts and compare them to the list first so that it will be easier to assemble.

This is what it should look like after assembling the parts. The story on the side is also getting more interesting as we progress with every task!

Additional parts are to be installed are shown. We are almost halfway through our project!

My kids are excited to see how this soundbox works. They started assembling parts after reading the story and, although there are no texts on the booklet, they were able to fit the pieces together by looking at the photos.

Now, they’re making sure the newly installed parts are stable.

We proceeded with the placement of metal plates and the preparation of the keys.

It’s good to stop and check once in a while to see if you’re doing the right thing.

Here, my son used the rubber bands to secure the parts together.

It’s now time to put the track of our cave soundbox!

We just have to make sure the keys are correctly placed on the track.

They started putting the keys in place. The booklet really made the tasks easier and the illustrations were easy to recognize and understand.

They did a great job! All the keys are correctly placed upon checking!

We’re almost done with our soundbox! Just a few more parts and we can see how this works.

The story on our booklet is also coming to an end. They are doing a great job saving the baby dragon!

The metal plates are also set and ready. The next step is to attach them to the horns, and then we’re done!

The gears inside are responsible for the movement of the track.

We can operate the soundbox by turning the handle on the side. The parts move accordingly with every turn of the handle.

The keys are placed in different positions, they trigger which hammer will hit the plates!

Each plate gives a different kind of sound when hit by the hammer.

The finished product looks good and works well!

Now that we’re done with the soundbox, it’s time to do more on-page activities.

There’s a page in the booklet that explains more about sound and how it is produced. There’s a mini-experiment to learn how it can travel with other substances!

More activities about sound are included on the next pages.

There’s even a maze, where kids need to find the right cup that Zac should use to talk with Newt! Another page contains a finish the picture activity.

The matching activity featuring Newt was also fun, as well as the line puzzle.

This project provided my kids with a great introduction to the science behind sounds!

MEL Science Kids is all about hands-on STEM projects for children. This month, my kids encountered another fun project, which is about making a soundbox. They were able to do this project with minimal adult support, with the help of the illustrated instructions on the booklet. They had fun assembling the parts and felt very fulfilled when they heard it work! The on-page activities were simpler but definitely added fun to the whole experience as well. Overall, we love MEL Kids’ content and we think it’s a great activity subscription for learning at home. Everything is always kid-friendly and they prove that learning is fun!
