This is a review of the Serena Williams Teaches Tennis class from MasterClass!

The MasterClass Instructor – Serena Williams

Serena Williams opens this class with a thank you to her viewers for taking the time to take this class, along with what she wants viewers to get out of her class. This class will strengthen anyone’s game on and off the court by working on the technical and mental aspects. Not only does she want to encourage players to strive to be the best they can be on the court, but she also wants to help viewers find their own fight and desire to always be better.

Serena Williams is a professional tennis player and was the number one singles player in the world for a total of 319 weeks. She has 21 Grand Slam Singles Titles, 13 Grand Slam Women’s Doubles Titles, and four Olympic Gold Medals.

When asked in a Trans World Sports interview at age 11 what tennis player she would like to be like, Serena responded, “I would want other tennis players to be like me.”

In this class, Serena focuses on fundamentals and how she has adapted her game over the years. She spends time on forehand and backhand groundstrokes, how to control a game against different opponents, serving techniques, and how to train like a professional. The class is focused on taking the instructional videos and then applying them to the court. Serena emphasis the only way to succeed is through focus, desire, and commitment, and through this class she can provide the tools, but it will only improve viewers’ game if they take the time to practice!

Tennis – Who is it for?

This class is for anyone who is interested in taking their tennis game to the next level! Whether you are just starting to play or you have been playing for years, this class has something for you! Serena takes the time to go through the basics and really share how she was taught when she was younger, but also adds to each lesson by sharing how she has used her technical training to create more power and control. Also, the class has more advanced lessons, along with a great more challenging lesson on Serena’s signature a backhanded groundstroke.

MasterClass Workbook – Serena Williams

The workbook for this class will be your key to practicing Serena’s video lessons, but as of right now half of the workbook is missing! The only chapter review in the workbook is for the lesson on serves, but it is a very extensive review with assignments for each technical aspect like the toss, how to clear your mind, and form. In the discussion boards viewers have put in a request to get this fixed, but MasterClass has said they are working on it since April 2020. Seems like it will be an excellent workbook, but viewers can not seem to get access to it right now!

MasterClass Tennis Key Takeaways

Other than the workbook issue, Serena Williams has created an excellent class. She really walks viewers step by step through each technique and shares her insights on the importance of the mental game. The class goes through techniques for forehand groundstrokes, backhand groundstrokes, serves, volleys, and smash techniques. She also talks about how to anticipate and react to really control each game.

Tennis is a fun sport and a great opportunity to learn a lot about life. You can learn how to fight, you can learn how to never give up.

What I really liked about this class was how Serena was able to demonstrate all of the techniques and talk through each one. Viewers get to see her in action and in training. Not only do viewers get to see her perform each technique, but she is able to slow down the video so viewers can take note of all of the movements including her how she turns her body, swings back, reaches forward, keeps her head down, and finally, how she follows through each time she hits the ball.

Final Thoughts Serena Williams’ MasterClass

Serena Williams has really created an inspiring and technical class. The detail and emphasis on hard work really provide a guide for viewers to learn from. The main issue with this class is the absence of the complete workbook, which from what is available shows it should be an extensive and beneficial part of this class. If you are looking to take your tennis skills to the next level this class is for you, but I would definitely consider waiting till the workbook issue is resolved before taking it.
